The Arizona Diamondbacks head into a challenging stretch of their schedule after being swept by the Tampa Bay Rays and winning the first two games of their series against the San Francisco Giants.

Sunday’s 5-1 loss against the Rays highlighted both the team’s offensive struggles and another difficult outing from veteran starter Merrill Kelly.

Arizona managed only five hits in the defeat, but the final score did not fully reflect the opportunities the offense created early in the game. The Diamondbacks put runners on base throughout the first four innings but failed to capitalize, finishing that stretch 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

Nolan Arenado, batting seventh in the lineup, struck out twice in those situations, and Arizona ultimately finished the game 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Ketel Marte provided the Diamondbacks’ only offense with a solo home run in the eighth inning, marking the second consecutive game in which he went deep during that frame after accomplishing the same feat on Saturday.

Arizona is 43-42 as it prepares for a demanding portion of the schedule. After facing the Giants tonight they take on a difficult National League stretch against the Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Kelly’s outing against Tampa Bay closely resembled his previous start against the St. Louis Cardinals.

For the second consecutive appearance, the veteran right-hander surrendered three earned runs during the first three innings. He managed to limit the early damage by inducing a timely double play in the opening inning, preventing Tampa Bay from adding to its advantage.

After that, Kelly appeared to regain control of the game, retiring eight consecutive hitters and giving Arizona an opportunity to climb back into the contest.

However, that momentum quickly disappeared.

Junior Caminero launched a solo home run in the fifth inning before Ben Williamson added another in the sixth, eliminating any realistic chance for Kelly to record a quality start.

When his afternoon came to an end, Kelly had completed six innings while allowing five earned runs on eight hits. He struck out three, walked two, and threw 93 pitches.

The outing represented another step backward at a time when the Diamondbacks need stability from the top of their rotation. With a demanding schedule looming against several National League contenders, Arizona will need stronger performances from its veteran starters if it hopes to strengthen its postseason position.

Missed scoring opportunities combined with inconsistent starting pitching have become a difficult combination to overcome, making the upcoming stretch one of the most important periods of the season.

Arizona is 0-6 in Kelly’s last six starts in which he has given up 25 earned runs and surrendered 10 home runs in 33.2 innings.

Kelly is 5-6 with a 5.84 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 81.2 innings in 14 starts this season, with 47 strikeouts against 33 walks.

Despite the disappointing results, Kelly remains one of the most respected leaders on Arizona’s pitching staff.

Throughout his career, he has built a reputation for professionalism, consistency, and an unwavering commitment to preparation. His ability to study opposing lineups and execute detailed game plans has helped him remain a dependable presence in the rotation for several seasons.

Kelly is also known for maintaining his composure regardless of the situation, an important quality for a veteran expected to guide younger pitchers through the challenges of a long season.
