Michael Soroka’s recovery from a left glute strain is accelerating, potentially bolstering the Arizona Diamondbacks’ depleted rotation soon.

The Arizona Diamondbacks received an encouraging update on the status of right-hander Michael Soroka as manager Torey Lovullo shared positive news regarding the veteran’s recovery from his recent injury.

Soroka was placed on the 15-day Injured List on June 20 because of a left glute strain. At the time, Lovullo estimated that the right-hander would likely miss four to six weeks. Based on the latest update, however, there is reason to believe Soroka could return closer to the beginning of that timeline.

Although Lovullo did not provide a specific return date, a four-week recovery would put Soroka in position to rejoin the Diamondbacks shortly after the All-Star break.

Speaking to the media, including Arizona Sports, Lovullo explained that Soroka’s glute injury has become largely asymptomatic, allowing the pitcher to begin the next phase of his rehabilitation.

Soroka Set to Start Throwing Program

According to the manager, Soroka is set to begin his throwing program while progressing toward bullpen sessions as quickly as his recovery allows. Lovullo added that the organization intends to move him through each stage as efficiently as possible, provided he continues experiencing no symptoms.

“That glute injury is fairly asymptomatic, so he’s going to begin his throwing program, bullpens, etc., and building up as best he can, as fast as he can to return to us,” Lovullo said.

Another encouraging development is that Soroka will not need additional imaging before resuming his throwing progression.

Lovullo also noted that the right-hander should be able to transition to bullpen work relatively soon. If those sessions do not begin this week, they are expected to start next week as long as his recovery continues on its current path.

Perhaps the most significant part of the update is that Soroka will not have to restart his rehabilitation from the beginning with an extended flat-ground throwing program.

D-backs Expect Faster Progression

Instead, Arizona expects a much faster progression once he begins throwing from the mound again. Lovullo emphasized that the organization wants to move quickly once Soroka reaches that point, reflecting the confidence the medical staff has in his recovery.

“It’s a fast turnaround” Lovullo noted. “Once he gets back on the bump, and starts that progression we want to be as quick as possible.”

The timing is especially important considering the challenges the Diamondbacks have faced with their starting rotation in recent weeks.

Injuries to both Soroka and Ryne Nelson have forced Arizona to rely on several young pitchers to fill important innings. José Cabrera has already been promoted to MLB and has made two starts, while Mitch Bratt made a three-inning spot start against the St. Louis Cardinals on June 24.

Brandon Pfaadt also returned to the rotation against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday, helping stabilize the pitching staff as the team works through its injury issues.

Even with those reinforcements, getting Soroka back as soon as possible would provide another experienced option for a rotation that has spent much of the season searching for consistency. If his recovery continues without setbacks, Arizona could receive an important boost shortly after the All-Star break.

Soroka is 8-3 with a 3.07 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 82 innings over 15 starts this season, with 79 strikeouts against 17 walks.

Beyond his ability on the mound, Soroka has earned widespread respect for his perseverance and professionalism.

Resilience Big Part of Soroka's Story

Throughout his career, he has repeatedly demonstrated resilience while working through adversity, refusing to allow setbacks to define him. His determination to return to competition has been praised by teammates, coaches, and organizations that have watched him continue pursuing his career despite numerous obstacles.

Soroka is also recognized for his calm demeanor, disciplined preparation, and willingness to embrace coaching as he continues refining his craft.

His experience allows him to provide leadership within a pitching staff, while his competitive mindset helps establish a positive example for younger teammates. Those qualities have made him a valued presence in every clubhouse he has joined.

As Arizona awaits his return, the Diamondbacks are looking forward not only to adding another capable starter but also to welcoming back a respected veteran whose work ethic, maturity, and leadership can have a meaningful impact throughout the remainder of the season.
