The Arizona Diamondbacks need their best players to be on their 'A' game if they want to collectively succeed.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are doing just enough to remain a winning team, but at 38-36, they are treading the line of playing .500 baseball.
Currently, injuries and inconsistent play are contributing to the obstacles the Diamondbacks are facing and their inability to break away and go on a legitimate run, which puts additional pressure on their best players such as Ketel Marte, Geraldo Perdomo, and Corbin Carroll to carry the weight of the burden of what it will take to be consistently successful.
In a recent appearance on the Wolf and Luke on Arizona Sports show, Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen talked about the importance of those three players and how vital they are when asked about their impact and if they need to lead the team out of tough stretches and into wins.
"Yeah, we're having those conversations internally," Hazen said. "I think it's a good question. Yeah, what we talked about this morning, we need our good players to be good, that's not some rocket science here, right? I'm not blowing anybody's mind with that statement.
"But like, you know it's great watching the Tommy Troys of the world come up and win a game for us in Cincinnati and impact the game," he added. "And it's fun and exciting what [Jose] Fernandez did in a couple games, like, that's awesome, and everybody gets so excited about it, we get excited about it."
While the ascension of young players is something Hazen and the organization is pleased with, the onus falls on their best players to provide the desired results.
"But the other four days or the other six days of that week, the good players need to carry what we're doing," Hazen said.
"And that hasn't happened on a consistent basis. We were doing really well with runners in scoring position for the first couple months of the season," he continued. "Now we've fallen and down to the very bottom of runners in scoring position. We're gonna find some middle ground to that.
"But it's not just Ketel, Corbin and Perdomo," Hazen added. "It's [Lourdes] Gurriel and [Gabriel] Moreno, too. It's you know, [Nolan] Arenado sitting there waiting to clean up all of that stuff. That's when we're gonna have a good offense and it's gonna become more robust."
As it currently stands, the Diamondbacks' offense is struggling. Out of 30 MLB teams, it ranks 23rd in batting average (.237), 26th in OPS (.691) and 25th in home runs.
