Costly errors and a late-inning collapse derailed Arizona's series opener. Now, the Diamondbacks must sharpen their defense and rely on Merrill Kelly to spark a holiday weekend rebound.
The Arizona Diamondbacks committed not one, not two, but three errors in their 7-4 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Sure, the game went into extra innings, but that doesn't excuse the fact that a team struggling to remain .500 committed a trio of errors.
Milwaukee took advantage of the miscues.
In total, the Diamondbacks used eight pitchers in a game that both teams will want to soon forget. Thankfully, they're set to do battle here on the Fourth of July, followed by what could be a winner-take-all series finale on Sunday, July 5, should the Diamondbacks respond with Merrill Kelly on the mound tonight.
Ryan Thompson's Crucial Error
Thompson, the team's eighth pitcher of the game, took his second loss of the season, mostly due to the crucial error he committed that led to the Brewers putting up a four-spot in the 11th inning.
Four of the Brewers seven runs came in the 11th, and while the Diamondbacks added one of their own in the bottom of the frame, it was far too little too late.
"We actually worked on those exact things, throwing to the catcher; we practiced it today, and I butchered it." Thompson said after the loss, according to MLB.com. "I believe in myself a lot to make plays. It's one of the things I pride myself on a lot. "We actually worked on those exact things, throwing to the catcher; we practiced it today."
Thompson continued, "So, bad mistake on my part, but in the moment, I believed in myself 1,000 percent to make the play, and even watching it [later] it might sound crazy, but I still think it's possible.
"If I make a good throw there, I get him out at the plate, and everything's different because of that. So, yeah, it's just belief in myself to make plays, and got to learn from it. The smart thing is eating the ball."
Good Teams Don't Let One Bad Loss Phase Them
Somehow, even at this point in the season, the jury is still out as to just how good this Diamondbacks team is right now. They've certainly shown flashes, whether it's Ketel Marte's power, Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s incredible defensive abilities, or Eduardo Rodriguez's hot start on the mound.
Ultimately, only the Diamondbacks can write their story. There's no doubt the Brewers are a great team, but now it's time for Arizona to respond and prove their series opening loss was a fluke due to one error that just so happened to put the writing on the wall.
