Jesús Sánchez cleared waivers after the Arizona Diamondbacks designated him for assignment.

Jesús Sánchez is likely headed back to free agency after the Arizona Diamondbacks designated the outfielder for assignment, and he subsequently cleared waivers.

Arizona outrighted Sánchez to Triple-A Reno, but he has the opportunity to elect free agency instead. The move brings an end to a difficult 2026 season for the veteran outfielder, who spent the year with both the Toronto Blue Jays and Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks claimed Sánchez off waivers from Toronto on Sept. 14 after the Blue Jays designated him for assignment. Arizona took on the remaining $500,000 of his contract with the hope that he could provide some production against right-handed pitching during the final weeks of the regular season.

That opportunity did not produce the results Arizona was looking for.

Sánchez appeared in six games for the Diamondbacks and went 2-for-15 with two singles and a walk. He struck out five times in 16 plate appearances before Arizona ultimately removed him from its 40-man roster.

The brief stint in Arizona left Sánchez with a .254/.311/.401 batting line for the 2026 season.

While Sánchez had previously established himself as a productive option against right-handed pitching, his overall offensive production declined this season. His struggles were particularly noticeable against left-handed pitchers, against whom he had limited success in a small sample.

Sánchez entered the season as a career .253 hitter against right-handers and had generally provided his best offensive production in a platoon role. That history could still make him an option for teams looking for a left-handed outfield bat, particularly if he can return to the form he showed earlier in his career.

His recent production, however, creates questions heading into free agency.

Sánchez was also coming off a difficult season defensively. He had previously been viewed as a capable defender in the outfield corners, but his performance in the field declined considerably in 2026.

He also experienced a decrease in his speed for the third consecutive season, another factor that could affect how teams view him entering the offseason.

Sánchez's career has included stretches of legitimate offensive production. During the 2023 and 2024 seasons, he combined to hit .268 with 30 home runs and 91 RBIs while establishing himself as a useful power option against right-handed pitching.

That production helped Sánchez carve out a role as an outfielder who could provide power in a platoon situation.

The 2026 season, however, marked a significant step backward.

Now 28 and turning 29 in October, Sánchez will enter the offseason looking for another opportunity after spending the final weeks of the season in Arizona.

His ability to contribute against right-handed pitching could give him a chance to find a role with another organization, but his recent offensive and defensive struggles will likely factor into the market for his services.

For now, Sánchez's time with the Diamondbacks is over after just six games, and his next opportunity will likely come as a free agent.
