Torey Lovullo’s contract status looms over a high-stakes Wild Card race, where missing the postseason could force the Arizona Diamondbacks to part ways with him.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are fighting for their postseason lives in a crowded National League Wild Card race. And the outcome could determine much more than whether the team plays baseball in October.
Arizona is battling the Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres for positioning, with the Diamondbacks currently sitting one game behind the Padres for the final National League Wild Card spot.
With more than a month remaining before the end of September, however, the situation could change quickly.
Lovullo is on a hot seat
For manager Torey Lovullo, the stakes appear particularly high.
According to Bob Nightengale from USA TODAY, Lovullo will likely need to guide the Diamondbacks into the postseason to remain their manager beyond 2026.
Nightengale reported that Lovullo is in the final year of his contract and that Arizona has not held discussions with him regarding an extension.
Barring a dramatic change, his continued employment appears likely to depend on whether the Diamondbacks qualify for the postseason.
“Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, barring a dramatic change, likely must make the playoffs to keep his job,” Nightengale wrote. “He’s in the final year of his contract, and there have been no talks about an extension.”
Arizona improved to 67-61 following Wednesday’s 7-6 road victory against the Boston Red Sox.
With two Wild Card spots still available, the Diamondbacks remain firmly involved in the race, but their margin for error is extremely small. Every loss has the potential to become increasingly costly as the remaining schedule disappears.
That puts Lovullo in the position of potentially managing for his job throughout the final weeks.
The former Manager of the Year and 2023 National League champion has built a solid résumé during his tenure with Arizona. This includes leading the Diamondbacks to the World Series against the Texas Rangers in 2023.
The results surrounding that postseason run have been less convincing.
Arizona finished 80-82 last year, while several mediocre seasons before the 2023 World Series appearance have contributed to questions surrounding Lovullo’s future.
There remains a possibility that the Diamondbacks could retain him even if they miss the postseason. However, another year without postseason baseball would provide the organization with a clear opportunity to move on from its 10th-year manager.
Why Lovullo can stay
Lovullo’s experience provides stability during a postseason race in which every result carries additional pressure.
Having already managed Arizona through a World Series appearance, he understands the demands of meaningful late-season baseball and how quickly momentum can change.
His familiarity with the roster is another important factor. After a decade with the organization, Lovullo knows the personalities inside his clubhouse and has extensive experience managing players through slumps, injuries and high-pressure situations.
Those qualities will be tested throughout the remainder of the 2026 campaign.
Lovullo does not have a contract beyond this season, and Nightengale’s report places even greater significance on Arizona’s postseason pursuit.
The Diamondbacks are chasing October, but their manager could simultaneously be coaching for his future with the organization.
