Manuel Pena heads to Triple-A after shattering personal records with 26 home runs. The Arizona Diamondbacks slugging prospect now tests his elite 1.027 OPS against top-tier pitching.
Manuel Pena has been climbing through the Arizona Diamondbacks ranks since 2021, and now he's reached the penultimate destination.
Arizona officially announced Pena, 22, is set to make his Triple-A debut after dominating the Double-A ranks.
Pena has 57 career home runs, 26 of which have come in AA this season. The Diamondbacks would love some extra power in the big leagues, but it's not like Pena is making his D-Backs debut anytime soon.
For now, the team will look to expand on his 26 home runs this year and stellar 1.027 OPS. To no surprise, both are career highs.
Is Pena's Power Legit?
Coming off a year with 14 home runs in 437 at-bats, Pena has been seeing the ball completely different this year. It's worth noting nothing has changed, he simply took the offseason to process everything and re-adjust. Now, he's on his way to superstardom.
It's hard not to get excited about Pena's power and jump from 2025 to 2026. Whether or not that translates to AAA remains to be seen, but at this point it's safe to say the sky is the limit for one of the team's Top 50 prospects.
Pena remains outside the team's Top 30, but that's not a death sentence. Remember, this is a young prospect who had a career .756 OPS before this season where suddenly he's put everything together.
For reference, Pena's 26 homers this season are more than he's had in his last three combined (23). Deep down, everyone has always known his power has been there, but no one expected him to have the type of 2026 he's churned out thus far.
Shortstop is Quite Crowded
There doesn't seem to be a world where Pena debuts in the big leagues this season, or even next year, but that's a conversation to be had in due time. Currently, one of the team's top shortstop prospects is No. 15 Cristofer Torin who has an ETA of 2027.
Torin plays both second base and shortstop, but the team's No. 2 prospect, Kayson Cunningham, is as good as it gets. Sure, Cunningham doesn't have an ETA until 2029, but he could always be used as trade bait if Pena clogs things up and continues this ride on the power train.
Ultimately, this is a great problem to have. The Diamondbacks aren't in a hurry to make a shortstop change in the big leagues, but Pena's promotion is more about seeing just how legit the Dominican Republic native truly is.
