Arizona Diamondbacks have called up infield prospect LuJames Groover for his major-league debut after a strong start at Triple-A Reno.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have added one of the organization's top position-player prospects to the major-league roster, selecting the contract of infielder LuJames Groover from Triple-A Reno.
To create room on the active roster, Arizona optioned infielder José Fernández to Reno. The club also designated right-hander Taylor Rashi for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.
Groover, 24, arrives in the majors less than three years after being selected in the second round of the 2023 MLB Draft. The right-handed hitter has steadily climbed Arizona's farm system and is regarded as one of the organization's most polished offensive prospects.
While Groover is not known for overwhelming power, evaluators have consistently praised his ability to control the strike zone. His disciplined approach has translated throughout the minor leagues, allowing him to maintain strong on-base numbers while limiting strikeouts.
Strong Triple-A Performance Opens the Door
After losing time to a wrist injury in 2024, Groover rebounded with a productive 2025 season and carried that momentum into Triple-A this year.
Through the first two months of the season, he posted an impressive .322/.421/.452 slash line while continuing to demonstrate advanced plate discipline. His ability to work counts and reach base consistently helped make him one of Reno's most reliable offensive contributors.
Defensively, Groover has spent most of his professional career at third base, though he has also seen action at first base. That versatility could provide Arizona with several options as manager Torey Lovullo looks to balance playing time across the infield and designated hitter spots.
Arizona Seeking Offensive Consistency
Groover's promotion comes as the Diamondbacks search for additional production from several roster spots.
Veteran utility infielder Ildemaro Vargas cooled significantly after a hot start to the season, while Fernández struggled offensively after an encouraging opening stretch. Meanwhile, Adrian Del Castillo has had difficulty establishing consistency at the plate.
The arrival of Groover gives Arizona another right-handed bat capable of contributing against both left-handed and right-handed pitching. Even if he is not immediately handed an everyday role, the organization appears eager to evaluate how one of its highest-ranked prospects can impact a club pushing for contention.
Rashi Designated for Assignment
Rashi's designation marks the end of a brief stint on Arizona's 40-man roster.
The 30-year-old right-hander appeared in the majors earlier this season and has spent most of the year at Triple-A. Despite posting respectable minor league numbers and generating strikeouts at a solid rate, command issues remained a challenge.
Arizona now has up to a week to determine Rashi's future. The club could attempt to trade him, place him on outright waivers, or retain him as organizational depth if he clears the process unclaimed.
