Gabriel Moreno, Ketel Marte delivered late-inning heroics in Cincinnati, overcoming rain delays and a gritty Reds lineup to push the Arizona Diamondbacks back above .500 with a series-clinching win.
The weather certainly wasn't on the Arizona Diamondbacks' or Cincinnati Reds' side, but the D-backs survived and pulled out a series victory in Cincinnati. Arizona won 5-3 at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.
The Reds jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a JJ Bleday home run, but Arizona's No. 9 hitter, Tommy Troy, evened things up in the second.
Immediately after, the Reds pulled out to a 2-1 lead before Arizona added a pair of runs in the sixth. Sadly, Cincinnati answered right back to even things up, 3-3.
Arizona tacked on a run in the eighth and ninth to secure a 5-3 series victory, despite being out-hit in the deciding game. Gabriel Moreno's eighth-inning bomb and Ketel Marte's insurance run in the ninth propelled the team back above .500.
Diamondbacks Improve to 36-35
After being swept in Miami, the Diamondbacks finished their six-game road slate by picking up a pair of victories. Great American Ball Park witnessed an Arizona victory in game one, 5-2, followed by a 2-1 Reds win ahead of this finale.
Zac Gallen made history in Cincinnati, but it was Juan Morillo who picked up his second win of the season. Morillo improved to 2-3 after he managed to get out of the seventh inning in just 14 pitches.
The Diamondbacks bullpen was rock solid, highlighted by Kevin Ginkel's fifth hold and Paul Sewald's 17th save of the season.
Four Players Drove in Runs
Geraldo Perdomo had the lone two-run homer for Arizona as the other two they had were all solo shots. In the end, it was Perdomo who knocked in a pair while Marte, Moreno, and Troy all had RBIs. For what it's worth, that was only Troy's second RBI of the season.
Incredibly, the Diamondbacks left seven on base but only had four at-bats with runners in scoring position. Marte provided the team their only hit in those scenarios, one that gave them a fifth insurance one as they went on to pick up a two-run victory.
Rock Solid Bullpen
As previously mentioned, the Diamondbacks pitchers weren't phased by the weather delay. Gallen did his thing, allowing three runs in six innings, striking out four in the process.
Ginkel had to work for his hold as he allowed two hits, which turned into a 28-pitch inning. Regardless, he got out of the eighth, paving the way for Sewald's save. With 17, Sewald now has the most in a season since he split time in Seattle and Arizona in 2023.
