A left shoulder capsule strain has sidelined Arizona Diamondbacks reliever A.J. Puk for another month, pushing a potential return to mid-August.
The Arizona Diamondbacks will have to continue waiting for A.J. Puk.
According to Bob Nightengale from USA TODAY, Arizona is shutting down Puk for another four weeks after he was diagnosed with a left shoulder capsule strain. Once that period ends, he will undergo another MRI to determine whether meaningful progress has been made in his recovery.
The update extends what has already been a frustrating stretch for both the player and the organization.
Puk has not made his season debut for Arizona in 2026, and the latest development guarantees that timeline will move back even further.
The setback follows earlier reports indicating that Puk had already been shut down from throwing while seeking additional medical opinions regarding his shoulder.
Those evaluations ultimately identified the issue as a shoulder capsule sprain.
The current plan is straightforward but lengthy.
Puk will remain shut down from throwing for four weeks before receiving follow-up imaging.
From there, based on the recovery timeline previously outlined by manager Torey Lovullo, Puk would still require approximately another four weeks to rebuild strength and prepare for game action.
Assuming there are no additional setbacks, that places a possible return somewhere around mid-August at the earliest.
The injury also comes after an already difficult recent stretch physically.
On June 20, 2025, Puk underwent an internal brace procedure on his left elbow, an alternative to Tommy John surgery designed to repair structural damage.
That procedure ended his 2025 season.
The hope entering this year was that a healthier version of Puk could return and provide impact innings.
Instead, recovery has remained complicated.
Puk posted a 3.38 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with four saves and two holds in just eight innings of work over eight appearances last season, recording 12 strikeouts and issuing just two walks.
The sample size was limited, but there were signs of effectiveness.
For Arizona, the continued absence creates another challenge for a team attempting to stabilize its pitching depth and remain competitive over the long season.
The organization now shifts focus toward recovery rather than immediate contribution.
Beyond results, Puk’s profile includes qualities that continue making him an intriguing player.
One of his most noticeable traits is perseverance.
Recovering from repeated interruptions requires patience and commitment that often go unnoticed externally.
Another important quality is adaptability.
Puk has navigated changing circumstances and continued adjusting his preparation and expectations.
He also brings competitiveness and a willingness to continue working through difficult stretches instead of stepping away from the process.
Those characteristics cannot speed up recovery timelines.
They can, however, become essential factors in whether a player successfully returns and reestablishes himself after long periods away from the field.
