The Arizona Diamondbacks will bring back Joe Mather for a sixth season as hitting coach.

The Arizona Diamondbacks will retain hitting coach Joe Mather for the 2027 season, giving manager Torey Lovullo continuity on the offensive side of his coaching staff as the organization looks to rebound from a disappointing campaign.

Mather will return for his sixth season in the role, according to reporting from Arizona Sports' Alex Weiner. The decision comes after Arizona secured Lovullo's future with a two-year contract on Oct. 1.

The Diamondbacks subsequently parted ways with pitching coach Brian Kaplan, but Mather will remain in place as the club evaluates its coaching staff heading into next season.

Mather's track record in Arizona

Mather brings both playing and coaching experience to the position. The former outfielder appeared in the major leagues from 2008 through 2012 before transitioning into coaching with Arizona's minor-league system in 2015.

He eventually left to join the Cincinnati Reds as an assistant hitting coach before returning to the Diamondbacks ahead of the 2022 season.

Although Arizona has reached the postseason only once during Mather's current tenure, winning the National League pennant in 2023, its offense has generally remained productive. The Diamondbacks have scored the fifth-most runs in the majors over that stretch, giving a strong reason to keep their hitting coach.

Moreno and Arenado provide offensive

Catcher Gabriel Moreno delivered one of the strongest seasons of his career, hitting .311 to capture the National League batting title. His performance stands out as a notable success for Mather and the Diamondbacks' offensive development.

Third baseman Nolan Arenado also provided encouraging results after arriving in Arizona during the offseason. He finished with 30 home runs, reaching that mark for the first time since 2022.

Still, the Diamondbacks did not receive consistent production from several established contributors. Outfielder Corbin Carroll, second baseman Ketel Marte, and shortstop Geraldo Perdomo all remained above-average hitters, but each was less effective than in 2025.

Marte's rebound could be critical

Marte's situation became a significant storyline in August after he missed the beginning of a series in Boston. Arizona placed him on the restricted list before transferring him to the injured list with left knee inflammation. He returned in September but posted a .683 OPS over the final month.

After the Diamondbacks' 86-76 finish, which left them two games short of a playoff berth, Lovullo said his approach to Marte would change. General manager Mike Hazen also publicly expressed frustration with the second baseman's repeated immaturity.

Marte's future remains worth monitoring. Hazen explored trade possibilities last offseason, but Marte's full no-trade protection, secured through 10-and-5 rights in April, gives the veteran control over any potential move.

If Marte returns, helping him rediscover his previous offensive form will be an important objective for Mather.

Arizona could otherwise maintain much of its existing position-player group in 2027. Moreno, Carroll, Perdomo, Arenado, Lars Nootbaar, Ryan Waldschmidt, and Jordan Lawlar remain under club control.
