The Arizona Diamondbacks prioritized continuity for manager Torey Lovullo following a resilient season defined by roster adversity and a narrow miss of the postseason.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have made an important decision regarding Torey Lovullo, retaining their manager with a two-year contract extension.
Arizona completed the agreement before a potential lockout, eliminating one significant source of uncertainty for the team’s immediate future.
Lovullo guided the Diamondbacks to an 86-76 record this season. Arizona missed the final National League Wild Card spot by only two games behind the Philadelphia Phillies.
Diamondbacks competed until last game
The Diamondbacks remained competitive late in the year and won six consecutive games before dropping their final two. Those losses officially eliminated them from postseason contention.
Michael Soroka helped extend that winning streak with a dominant performance against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on Sept. 22.
Soroka allowed two runs (one earned) while surrendering two hits (one home run) with nine strikeouts and a walk in seven innings to earn a 7-2 victory.
That performance kept Arizona’s slim postseason hopes alive.
Soroka’s final appearance was less effective after his resurgence with the Diamondbacks this season.
He allowed three earned runs while surrendering three hits, including a home run to Gavin Sheets, with four strikeouts and two walks to get a no-decision in a 9-4 road loss to the San Diego Padres on Sunday.
Lovullo also managed considerable roster adversity. Arizona lost several important players to injuries, while Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen performed below expectations.
According to Nick Piecoro from The Arizona Republic, Lovullo received a two-year agreement that aligns his contract with general manager Mike Hazen’s deal.
“Per a source, Lovullo gets a two-year deal, which lines him up contractually with GM Mike Hazen,” Piecoro wrote.
Lovullo’s time with Diamondbacks
Lovullo’s work deserves recognition because injuries forced him to shuffle the lineup repeatedly throughout the season. His ability to adjust while players struggled or became unavailable remained evident during the entire campaign.
The manager owns a 750-768 record during his 10 seasons with Arizona and ranks first in franchise history in victories.
Lovullo is the longest-tenured manager in Diamondbacks history. He also reached 100 victories faster than any other Arizona manager, accomplishing the feat in his 171st game.
He is the third-longest-tenured manager in MLB.
Lovullo’s tenure includes Arizona’s 2023 World Series appearance, which they lost in five games against the Texas Rangers. The Diamondbacks’ 2023 National League pennant and World Series appearance were their first since winning the World Series in 2001 against the New York Yankees.
Lovullo brings adaptability, patience and ability to maintain trust during difficult periods. Constant lineup changes require a manager to communicate clearly and keep players prepared for shifting responsibilities.
His connection with the organization also provides stability. Lovullo understands Arizona’s personnel, expectations and internal culture after a decade in charge.
He has demonstrated loyalty without becoming resistant to change. His willingness to adjust roles, support struggling players and manage injuries helped Arizona remain competitive until the final weekend.
The extension keeps an experienced and respected leader alongside Hazen for the next two years.
