Diamondbacks stayed patient
Arizona's confidence in Rodriguez never wavered despite his difficult start with the organization.
Manager Torey Lovullo and general manager Mike Hazen were already familiar with Rodriguez from his time with the Boston Red Sox, giving them confidence that he could eventually return to pitching at a high level.
That belief has been rewarded this season as Rodriguez has consistently delivered quality starts and solidified his place in the Diamondbacks' rotation.
Early signs of a turnaround
Before the regular season began, Rodriguez showed encouraging signs while pitching for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic championship game.
The left-hander tossed 4.1 scoreless innings in an impressive outing, giving Arizona's coaching staff another indication that he was trending in the right direction entering the season.
Rodriguez carried that momentum into the regular season, putting together one strong performance after another to earn his first trip to the Midsummer Classic.
A milestone years in the making
One of the most rewarding moments for Lovullo came when he was able to tell Rodriguez he had been selected as an All-Star.
Pitching coach Brian Kaplan also credited Rodriguez's growth this season to his commitment to preparation and his trust in the game plan established before each start.
After waiting more than a decade for the opportunity, Rodriguez has finally reached one of the few milestones that had eluded him.
His first All-Star selection is not only a reflection of his performance this season, but also of the perseverance he showed while working through two challenging years before returning to the level Arizona believed he could reach.
