Arizona Diamondbacks are expected to activate Jordan Lawlar ahead of Friday's series opener against the Cincinnati Reds.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are expected to activate Jordan Lawlar from the 60-day Injured List before Friday's series opener against the Cincinnati Reds. The move would bring back one of the organization's most talented young players after he missed more than two months with a fractured right wrist.

Lawlar's injury occurred on April 3 when he was hit by a pitch, abruptly ending what appeared to be a promising start to his season. The timing was especially unfortunate, as the injury came on the same night he recorded his first major league home run.

Continuing the Outfield Transition

Before landing on the injured list, Lawlar had begun seeing regular action in the outfield as Arizona looked to increase his versatility as a utility player. The former shortstop prospect made multiple starts in left field and also appeared in center field during the opening weeks of the season.

That transition appears set to continue. During his recent rehab assignment, Arizona used Lawlar exclusively in the outfield, suggesting the organization remains committed to giving him opportunities there upon his return.

Injuries Have Slowed His Development

Although Lawlar has long been viewed as one of baseball's top prospects, injuries have limited his ability to establish himself at the major-league level.

A thumb injury sidelined him for much of the 2024 season, while a hamstring strain later that year cost him additional time in Triple-A. Entering his return, Lawlar has appeared in only 48 big-league games in the course of three seasons.

Arizona Seeking More Outfield Production

The Diamondbacks' outfield has largely been carried by Corbin Carroll, who has enjoyed an outstanding season and remains one of the club's most productive players.

Elsewhere, Arizona has struggled to find consistency. Rookie Ryan Waldschmidt has shown encouraging flashes but has also battled strikeout issues during his first extended major-league opportunity.

Tommy Troy has received increased playing time in left field and demonstrated solid plate discipline, though he is still looking to make a larger offensive impact.

Additional Help Could Be Coming

Lawlar may not be the only reinforcement on the horizon. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. continues progressing from a hamstring injury and could rejoin the club in the coming weeks.

Veteran outfielder Max Kepler is also expected to become available later this month after completing his suspension.

While those additions could further strengthen Arizona's depth chart, Lawlar's return provides an immediate boost to a roster looking to remain in the National League postseason picture.

Corresponding Moves Loom

Arizona will need to make both active roster and 40-man roster moves once Lawlar is officially activated.

Reserve outfielder Jorge Barrosa could be among the players affected after struggling offensively this season. The Diamondbacks also have the option of sending one of their younger position players back to Triple-A as they determine the best roster configuration moving forward.
