The Arizona Diamondbacks were one out away from a win before watching it slip away against the Texas Rangers.
The Arizona Diamondbacks suffered a brutal 6-5 loss to the Texas Rangers on Wednesday in a game that came down to the final blows of the ninth inning.
The Diamondbacks trailed 3-0 heading into the sixth inning after allowing the Rangers to hang run after run on them in the fifth, but they were able to respond with five unanswered runs between the sixth and ninth innings to take a 5-3 lead.
However, the Rangers responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the ninth to steal the game back.
Afterward, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo reacted to the loss.
"This game will rip your heart out, but the one thing I want to say is these guys play their [expletive] off," Lovullo told the media. "And, you know, when you look at the full body of work, I thought today there was so much progress. And we were pushing in the right direction."
The Diamondbacks received a strong performance from starting right-hander Ryne Nelson through seven innings in which he struck out eight batters while allowing four hits and three earned runs. Then, they handed the ball to reliever Kevin Ginkel while the offense continued to work its way back into the game.
"And, you know, I learned a lot about this team as I watched them rally and come together in those late innings and fight to win that baseball game," Lovullo said. "Unfortunately, it didn't happen, but we play games like that. And I know they're very eager to get back out there and show what they can do."
With a two-run lead to protect in the ninth, the Diamondbacks gave the ball to reliever Paul Sewald to close the game, and he was able to force the Rangers into two outs while only allowing a single. Then, disaster struck.
Sewald allowed an RBI double to Ezequiel Duran to make it a 5-4 game before walking Alejandro Osuna. Then, he allowed an RBI single to Jake Burger to make it a tie game, and his night was over.
The Diamondbacks got Sewald off the mound and went to Juan Morillo to try and get them out of the frame and force extra innings, but a Danny Jansen single drove home the game-winning run for the Rangers.
"We're going to be just fine. He was leaving it arm side," Lovullo said about Sewald. "I think there were some misses with his fastball, and we've been so reliant on him. He's been perfect in that role. So, it's tough.
"It's a tough situation," he added. "And, you know, we just got to digest it, understand what happened. He will be ready to go on Friday."
