Former Arizona Diamondbacks top prospect Alek Thomas was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.

The Arizona Diamondbacks officially turned the page on former top prospect Alek Thomas on Tuesday, trading the center fielder to the rival Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for outfield prospect Jose Requena.

The deal comes just days after Arizona designated Thomas for assignment following the promotion of highly regarded prospect Ryan Waldschmidt.

For Arizona, the move reflects both roster evolution and the organization’s confidence in its emerging outfield depth. Thomas entered professional baseball as one of the franchise’s most promising young players and quickly rose through the system because of his athleticism, defense, and speed.

While he flashed potential at times in the majors, offensive inconsistency prevented him from fully establishing himself as a long-term everyday player.

Over parts of five seasons with Arizona, Thomas struggled to produce consistently at the plate. His aggressive approach often led to poor swing decisions and limited on-base success, making it difficult for him to secure a permanent role in a competitive lineup.

Despite those challenges offensively, Thomas remained a respected defender capable of covering significant ground in center field.

The Diamondbacks had explored potential changes to their outfield mix for multiple seasons, with both Thomas and former outfielder Jake McCarthy frequently mentioned in trade speculation.

McCarthy was dealt to the Colorado Rockies during the offseason, and now Thomas also departs the organization as Arizona continues reshaping its roster around younger contributors.

Arizona’s current outfield alignment now features a combination of established stars and developing talent. Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. remain key pieces, while Waldschmidt and Jorge Barrosa are expected to receive opportunities moving forward.

The organization clearly believes its next wave of young outfielders is ready for a larger role at the major league level.

In return, Arizona receives Requena, a 17-year-old Venezuelan prospect who signed earlier this year. The 6-foot-3 outfielder is viewed as a long-term project with intriguing power potential and a strong throwing arm.

Although he has not yet appeared in a professional game, the Diamondbacks add another developmental piece to a growing farm system focused on athletic upside.

Ultimately, the trade closes an important chapter for Thomas in Arizona while allowing the Diamondbacks to continue prioritizing flexibility within their roster, thereby making room for younger talent in the future.
