With postseason hopes hanging by a thread, the Arizona Diamondbacks final homestand begins against a struggling Texas Rangers squad.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are one of three teams that haven't been eliminated from playoff contention in the National League West.
While there have only been four teams officially eliminated, it's crazy to think that two of those are in the NL West and the other two are in the American League West.
The Texas Rangers haven't been eliminated from playoff contention either, far from it -- but both the D-backs and Rangers are currently on the outside looking in.
Heading into this crucial three-game series, the Diamondbacks are currently half a game back of the final NL Wild Card spot while the Rangers are two games behind what it'll take to sneak into the AL Wild Card.
Diamondbacks' final homestand begins
One of the big advantages the D-backs have in this series is the fact that it's their final homestand. Chase Field has a chance to witness nine more games, not including a potential playoff run, so they have to make sure every single one counts.
Arizona failed to complete the sweep from Sept. 7-9, but they still come into this series having won four of their last five, and five of their last seven.
Sitting at 78-69, it's crazy to think that manager Torey Lovullo's squad is 0.5 games back of the playoffs while the 72-75 Rangers are only 2.0 games back themselves.
That right there shows the difference between the American League to the National League, but at the end of the day there's simply nothing the D-backs can do about it.
Winning is the only thing they can do, and from there, the rest is out of their hands.
The Rangers are just 6-9 in their last 15 games, and this is a team that's dropped five of their last eight. There's no telling as to which version of the Rangers is going to show up in Phoenix, Ariz., especially since this is a team that has a minus-41 run differential, which is the worst among the top six teams fighting for three AL Wild Card spots.
Not only that, but the Rangers are an abysmal 32-43 on the road. They're eight games over .500 at Globe Life Field, but that can only get them so far.
With three consecutive series at home, the D-backs are looking to add to their stellar 41-31 home record. For reference, they have as many wins at home as the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs, and those just happen to be the top two teams in the NL Wild Card race.
