The Arizona Diamondbacks legend surpassed Brandon Webb to claim the second-place spot on the club’s all-time strikeout list, continuing his climb toward greatness despite a shifting pitching profile.

Officially, Zac Gallen is now the Arizona Diamondbacks' second all-time strikeouts leader.

While he still has quite a ways to go before reaching Randy Johnson's 2,077, Gallen now has 1,067 and has passed Brandon Webb's 1,065.

Gallen wasn't exactly a strikeout machine in the series finale, but he struck out four Reds, which helped make history in Cincinnati.

Zac Gallen's Franchise Strikeout Record

No one is asking Gallen to catch Johnson's 2,000-plus strikeout total, but it's still insanely impressive he crossed 1,000 and reached second place in franchise history. After starting his career in Miami, the former Marlins pitcher came to Arizona the same year he debuted, 2019.

Remember, that trade took place on July 31, 2019, in a deal that saw Jazz Chisholm Jr. exchanged. Trades like these are crazy to look back on seven years later, especially knowing how far both players have come.

Gallen, to no surprise, has 139-plus strikeouts in each of his last five seasons, including a career-high 220 in 2023. He's coming off a season where he struck out 175 batters in 33 starts which was the second highest start total of his career.

So far this season, Gallen has a negative WAR which would be a first for his illustrious career. Sitting at -0.7 is far from ideal, but Gallen did enough against the Reds to help the Diamondbacks get back to a positive win/loss record.

Strikeout Percentage Has Been Down

Coming off a four-strikeout game, it's crazy to think that equals the total of his first two starts in the month of June combined. With three back on June 9 and just one on June 3, Gallen hasn't exactly been striking out batters at a high rate this season.

As of June 14, Gallen is in the bottom five percentile for his strikeout percentage. And, 14.7% is far closer to the bottom of the league than it is the top, but even with that total where it is, he continues to pitch at a relatively high level and hold his spot in this starting rotation.

Obviously, Gallen's strikeout percentage hasn't always been this low. He hasn't ever eclipsed 30%, but there have been a few occasions where he's sat above 25%, including every season up until 2025.

All-in-all, his average K% is 24.8, so with where it's at in 2026, that's nearly a full 10 percentage points lower which has plenty for Diamondbacks fans to be concerned about.
