Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen has made his mark in franchise history.
Despite giving up six hits, three earned runs (two home runs), and two walks, Sunday’s outing against the Cincinnati Reds proved to be a good one for Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen.
Gallen, who notched four strikeouts in Arizona’s 5-3 win, moved up to second on the franchise’s all-time strikeout list, passing Brandon Webb. With his four punch-outs, Gallen is at 1,067, while Webb is at 1,065. No. 1 on the list is Randy Johnson, who remains far ahead of Gallen with 2,077 strikeouts.
After the game, Gallen talked with MLB.com and other present media members about his accomplishment and outing as a whole.
"Yeah, I honestly didn't know how close I was," Gallen said. "I knew at some point I just didn't, I wasn't really keeping track. So yeah, I mean, um, it's great. I mean, Webby, he's an all timer, so to kind of pass him, it's been fun to kind of, you know, see my name get up there.
"I think every time I'm just going to have a joke about who's in first," Gallen added. "I think I'll have to play like 20 more years to see if I can get in first place. But yeah, you know, it’s a nice honor for sure."
Gallen reflected on the home runs he gave up, which came in the bottom of the first inning in the form of a solo shot to JJ Bleday, the second batter Gallen faced. In the bottom of the sixth inning, he allowed a solo home run to Noelvi Marte, which tied the game at 3-3.
"Yeah, I feel like we kind of had everything working at different points in the game," Gallen said. "Um, just tried to stay in the strike zone, and just kind of two mistakes. I mean, I wouldn't even really call the Bleday one a mistake, just trying to be in the strike zone on there.
"The Marte ball was just, you know, slider just stayed up," he added. "So I mean, in the long run, I think over a process of things that like I've been told that solo homers, you know, they're not necessarily going to hurt you. I mean, it just shows you're just challenging to be in the strike zone. But obviously, that is probably the one I would like to have back."
Despite the runs the Reds earned off Gallen, he still feels good about his execution on the mound and the defense behind him.
"I feel like we were moving in sync pretty good after the first inning," Gallen said. "Yeah, It's nice. I mean I think this year my ground ball rate's been up. So, being able to use it to my advantage in spots like that to be able to, you know, eliminate two outs with one pitch is kind of nice.
"So yeah," Gallen added. "Obviously you can put them on the ground, trust our defense; guys behind me today. So, it was good."
After his 15th start of the season, Gallen is now 3-5 with a 5.35 ERA.
