Riding a red-hot Ketel Marte and elite pitching, Arizona aims to dominate the Colorado Rockies and maintain their NL West momentum by clinching a crucial third consecutive series.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are one win away from securing their third straight series victory, something that hasn't happened since early April.
After starting the year 0-3, Arizona swept the Detroit Tigers to get back on track. They won two of four against the Atlanta Braves before going on to win their next four series.
Since that span from April 7-19, Arizona lost five of seven series up until May 15. Now, they're on a hot streak against the Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants.
Thankfully for the Diamondbacks, they're one win away from another series victory over Colorado. After this series comes to an end, they'll head to San Francisco for three more games against a struggling Giants squad.
Diamondbacks Look to Take Three vs. Rockies
Four-game series aren't extremely common, but this is the type of series that benefits the Diamondbacks late in the year. Winning every single possible game is paramount to their success in the National League West Division, a division that has been dominated by the Los Angeles Dodgers these past few seasons.
Regardless, Arizona has won six of its last seven and one more win against the Rockies secures their third straight series victory. A 2-2 split isn't the end of the world, but the last thing the Diamondbacks want to be doing right now is dropping games to the division's worst team.
Pitching Matchup
Jose Quintana (2-2, 4.08 ERA) vs. Ryne Nelson (1-3, 5.19 ERA)
Arizona's pitching staff has been incredible, but they've gotten a huge boost on offense, especially from a guy like Ketel Marte. Marte is as hot as it gets, but one hitter can only carry the team so far.
Looking at their last six games, Arizona hasn't allowed more than four runs. Those four runs came in their 5-4 victory last night, and even their loss in game two of the series saw them allow just three runs in a narrow, 3-2, defeat.
Hottest Player in Baseball?
It's not out of the question to say Marte may be one of, if not the hottest player in all of baseball.
He's riding a seven-game hitting streak, one that has seen him record multiple hits in five of those games. He's had two or more hits in six of his last nine games, and during his hitting streak, he's hit three home runs and has driven in nine runs.
Not only that, but the 32-year-old has drawn four walks in the hitting streak and has struck out just one time in his last 11 games.
