The Arizona Diamondbacks were dealt another potential injury setback Friday night after outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. exited Arizona’s 3-2 loss against the Colorado Rockies because of left hamstring tightness.

Gurriel left the game during the top of the sixth inning after experiencing discomfort while making a sliding defensive play in the outfield. The veteran outfielder immediately came out of the contest and is scheduled to undergo an MRI examination Saturday to determine the severity of the issue.

Following the game, Arizona manager Torey Lovullo described Gurriel as day-to-day pending further evaluation. While Lovullo stopped short of expressing major concern, he acknowledged there is at least some uncertainty surrounding the situation as the club awaits imaging results.

The injury comes at a difficult time for both Gurriel and the Diamondbacks. Gurriel had been one of Arizona’s most productive hitters on Friday night before leaving the game, accounting for both of the team’s runs offensively.

He first drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning before later delivering an RBI single in the fourth.

Despite the early production, Arizona’s offense struggled to generate additional opportunities late in the game after Gurriel’s departure, ultimately dropping a tightly contested matchup to Colorado.

For Gurriel, the latest injury concern is especially notable considering the adversity he already overcame earlier in the year. Last September, the veteran suffered a torn ACL in his right knee, an injury that required season-ending surgery and initially cast doubt over when he would return in 2026.

At the time, the expectation was that Gurriel could potentially miss the opening months of the season while recovering from the major knee procedure. However, the outfielder accelerated his rehab process significantly and returned to Arizona’s active roster on April 18, much earlier than originally projected.

His quick recovery became one of the more encouraging developments for the Diamondbacks early in the season as Gurriel immediately resumed an important role in the middle of Arizona’s lineup.

Because of that recent medical history, the organization will likely approach this newest injury situation cautiously until the MRI results provide greater clarity.

Should Gurriel miss additional time, it would create another challenge for an Arizona roster attempting to remain competitive in a tightly contested National League playoff race.

The Diamondbacks will now wait for Saturday’s evaluation before determining whether the veteran outfielder will require time on the injured list or avoid a more serious absence.
