Ketel Marte’s relationship with the Arizona Diamondbacks is fractured and his long-term role with the team is in question, as they fight to reach the postseason.
Ketel Marte has spent years establishing himself as one of the faces of the Arizona Diamondbacks. However, the events of the past week have created a question that would have seemed almost unthinkable before his absence.
Does Marte still have a long-term future in Arizona?
The issue goes beyond his current stay on the 10-day Injured List.
The story so far
Marte skipped the August 17 road game against the Boston Red Sox and was essentially radio silent with manager Torey Lovullo and his teammates, initially leading Arizona to place him on the Restricted List.
Lovullo later acknowledged that his emotions progressed from concern about Marte’s safety to feeling betrayed by how the situation developed.
Marte eventually met with Lovullo and general manager Mike Hazen at Salt River Field on Thursday.
MRIs taken during his absence revealed inflammation in his upper left hamstring and the medial joint of his left knee, resulting in Arizona moving him from the Restricted List to the 10-day IL.
Hazen expects Marte to rejoin the Diamondbacks when healthy and be welcomed back.
That does not necessarily mean everything immediately returns to normal.
Several teammates have wanted answers about what happened. Kevin Ginkel acknowledged the frustration within the clubhouse and indicated that an explanation from Marte would be appreciated.
Another layer was added Friday when Marte was spotted gambling at Talking Stick Resort casino during Arizona’s 9-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.
Lovullo defended Marte, explaining that injured players are not required to attend games and emphasizing that Marte had reported to Salt River earlier Friday to complete rehabilitation work on his left knee.
None of that changes Marte’s importance as a player.
Projecting Marte’s future
The 32-year-old is hitting .249 with 21 home runs and 67 RBIs in 118 games this season. When healthy and focused, Marte remains one of Arizona’s most dangerous offensive players.
His switch-hitting ability provides balance to the lineup. He brings power, patience and the ability to produce in important situations while occupying a premium position at second base.
Arizona needs those qualities immediately.
The Diamondbacks are fighting for one of the final two National League Wild Card spots, sitting one game behind the San Diego Padres and three behind the Philadelphia Phillies.
But the larger question extends beyond 2026.
Marte has been central to Arizona’s identity and was instrumental in its 2023 World Series appearance against the Texas Rangers. His relationship with the organization has been built over years, not days.
That history matters, but so does trust inside a clubhouse.
The Diamondbacks clearly intend to bring Marte back once he is healthy. What happens afterward could become considerably more important.
If Marte returns, produces and repairs whatever damage the situation created internally, this episode could eventually become something Arizona moves beyond.
If questions about communication and trust remain, the organization may eventually have to consider something that previously seemed unlikely.
Marte’s ability has never been the question.
For the first time in years, his future with the Diamondbacks might be.
