San Diego Padres secured home-field advantage while shattering the Arizona Diamondbacks' six-game surge.
The Arizona Diamondbacks had a golden opportunity to control their destiny in the regular season finale, but the San Diego Padres had other plans.
The Padres had seeding to fight for, and they were able to secure home-field advantage in the Wild Card series with a 10-7 victory over the D-backs.
It was Arizona's first loss since Friday, Sept. 18, officially snapping a six-game winning streak.
The Diamondbacks are now 86-75 heading into the final game of the regular season, one where they know it'll require a win combined with a Philadelphia Phillies loss in order to make the playoffs.
Diamondbacks lose game with 23 combined hits
Each team had a double-digit hit total, but that's not something that ended up working out in the D-backs' favor.
The surprise of the night was seeing Padres' Yuki Matsui pick up the win, improving to 5-1 on the year despite only recording one out on four pitches.
Walker Buehler was chased after 3.2 innings as he gave up three earned runs on five hits.
Somehow, the D-backs were able to score three runs against Mason Miller, but entering the ninth inning they trailed 10-4, so it wasn't even a save situation.
Miller gave up three of the team's 10 hits and issued a team-high two walks. No matter how hard they tried, it was just too little too late for the D-backs in this one.
Jose Cabrera falls to 0-4
Remember, Corbin Burnes was originally supposed to start this game. Burnes went back on the Injured List, and barring any crazy circumstances, his 2026 season is likely done.
This turned out to be a bullpen game for the D-backs, and that was working out alright until Jose Cabrera came into the contest.
Cabrera officially blew his first save of the year as he gave up five earned runs on five hits. He threw 40 pitches but only recorded four outs, and ended up taking the loss as he put the D-backs in quite the predicament.
San Diego scored in the first, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, plating two or more runs in the third through sixth.
Eighth-hitter James McCann put the D-backs on top, 4-3, with his seventh homer of the year off Buehler with two outs in the fourth inning, but the Padres would score seven unanswered.
Arizona's playoff hopes aren't out the window just yet, but they'll need to secure a win and hope the Tampa Bay Rays once again take care of business against the Phillies.
