The Arizona Diamondbacks scored three runs in the sixth and seventh innings to edge out the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, 3-2, to complete the sweep, and manager Torey Lovullo had a lot of good things to say about his team afterward.

"There's a little bit of a gut check today," Lovullo said. "It wasn't easy. I think we were a little bit gassed, we're tired."

The Diamondbacks have played 13-straight games and 22 in the last 23 days, and Lovullo applauded the group for persevering despite fatigue.

"A long journey of what, 13 or 14 straight?" Lovullo said. "And these guys just kept fighting. So, I expect to be able to counter. I expect for our guys to be in the right mindset and focus just a little bit more than you possibly should in those moments where it's very, very critical."

The Diamondbacks’ defense showed up in a big way in the eighth inning to protect their 3-2 lead when a relay throw by third baseman Jose Fernandez got Willy Adames out at home plate.

Then, reliever Kevin Ginkel picked off Luis Arraez to end the eighth inning, which are the type of plays that Lovullo pointed to for Arizona to rely on when other parts of the game are not going as smoothly.

"I'd like to think so," Lovullo said. "I think we can always rely on that. It's one thing that doesn't go in a slump. You're able to make your plays, prepare the best way you can and go out and make big plays in big moments.

"And there was no bigger plays than the pickoff to end the eighth, and then the recovery play by both the left fielder, center fielder, and then ultimately, Fernandez hit that massive out and home plate," Lovullo added.

Lovullo also praised Michael Soroka, who pitched six innings and struck out three batters while allowing four hits and two earned runs. Soroka earned the winning decision, which improved him to 7-2 on the season.

"He was great, he was great," Lovullo said. "I know I clipped him early, I had a little discussion with him. He did his job, and it was time to go to the bullpen, but he was fantastic. He was just pounding the zone, found a little tick up in the velocity, which we've been looking for.

"We've been very aware of where he's been," Lovullo added. "And we wanna make sure that he's healthy, and he came out of this one real good. It was great."

The Diamondbacks are now winners of five straight games and are second in the National League West Division.
