The Diamondbacks found a way to respond to the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday.

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo had plenty to be satisfied with after his team’s bounce back win over the Chicago White Sox.

The Diamondbacks defeated the White Sox on Wednesday, 11-7 after dropping the first game of the series on Tuesday, 11-5. Arizona’s offense was highly effective as it went 16-for-38 at the plate with six batters notching a multi-hit game, which was led by Nolan Arenado’s 4-for-4 night.

“I think offensively we carried the workload today with, you know, a really good approach,” Lovullo told the media. “16 hits, six walks, you know, over 20 base runners kept building innings and scored a ton of runs.”

While Arenado shined with his perfect night at the plate, the story of the evening was the performance of first baseman IIdemaro Vargas, who hit two home runs in back-to-back innings that notched five RBIs for his team.

“Clearly the highlight was Vargie with two home runs,” Lovullo said.

Lovullo also credited Vargas for providing energy with his first home run of the evening, which came in the form of a three-run shot in the bottom of the second to provide a response and a 3-2 lead for the Diamondbacks after they had fallen behind in the first inning, 2-0.

Vargas’ next home run occurred in the bottom of the third inning where he sent a two-run blast over the left center field wall to make it a 6-3 game in favor of Arizona.

The performance by Vargas and his teammates provided breathing room for Arizona, specifically starting left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez, who had a turbulent five-inning outing in which he allowed six hits, four earned runs and three walks while striking out four batters.

“On the mound, you know, I thought E-Rod gave us what he could,” Lovullo said. “He gave us five innings, and I think there were some mistakes today, but he made some pitches when he had to.

“In fact, he was down to his last hitter there against Montgomery and got him back into the dugout with a chance to win a game,” Lovullo added. “And that's what starters are supposed to do.”

From there, the Diamondbacks employed four relievers through the rest of the game to carry them on the mound. Despite the bullpen giving up three more runs, they did enough in conjunction with the offense to get them across the finish line.

“I think the bullpen was adequate,” Lovullo said. “I know there's one situation where we got a little nicked up, but overall we won the game.

“We lost a couple tough games, we got beat up a little bit, but the guys came out and really stuck their foot in the dirt and said let's go out and win the way we know how to,” he added. “And I was proud of the guys for that.”
