After a productive first season in Arizona, Michael Soroka could be a candidate to return to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Arizona Diamondbacks could look to bring back right-hander Michael Soroka after the veteran starter delivered a strong first season with the club.
Arizona is expected to have interest in re-signing Soroka when he reaches free agency, according to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. Soroka has also expressed interest in remaining with the Diamondbacks after spending the 2026 season in Arizona.
Soroka joined the Diamondbacks on a one-year, $7.5 million contract and provided the rotation with a productive option when healthy. He finished the season with a 3.41 ERA across 22 appearances while recording 114 strikeouts.
Soroka provides strong first season
The 29-year-old finished second among Diamondbacks pitchers in strikeouts and posted a 24.1% strikeout rate, giving Arizona a much-needed source of missed bats in a rotation that struggled in that area throughout the season.
Health remains the biggest question surrounding Soroka heading into free agency. He spent approximately six weeks on the Injured List with a left glute strain before returning in August. Later that month, arm inflammation sent him back to the Injured List for another brief absence.
Even with those setbacks, Soroka reached 116 innings, his largest workload since 2019. His injury history could limit his earning potential compared with more durable starters, but his age and 2026 performance should still put him in position to pursue a multiyear contract.
Soroka's arsenal also gives him an intriguing foundation for another strong season. His fastball generally sits in the low-to-mid 90s, while his breaking ball has become an effective swing-and-miss offering. He also introduced a cutter this season, giving him another pitch to attack opposing hitters.
Diamondbacks need rotation help
The Diamondbacks have plenty of reasons to explore a reunion.
Arizona's rotation could undergo significant changes this offseason. Zac Gallen is headed toward free agency after a difficult season, while Corbin Burnes enters the offseason with health questions after spending much of the past two seasons dealing with injuries. Merrill Kelly also struggled in 2026, leaving Arizona with several uncertainties heading into the offseason.
Brandon Pfaadt and Eduardo Rodriguez posted solid ERAs, but neither generated many strikeouts. Ryne Nelson also missed much of the second half because of a partial flexor tear.
Soroka could fill important need
With the Diamondbacks needing more swing-and-miss ability in their rotation, retaining Soroka would address an important need while giving the club a pitcher already familiar with its organization.
Arizona could pursue multiple starting pitchers this offseason, making Soroka one potential piece of the solution.
A multiyear contract in the range of $14 million to $16 million annually could provide Soroka with a significant raise while giving the Diamondbacks another established starter without committing to the top end of the free-agent market.
