As the Arizona Diamondbacks chase a Wild Card spot, a veteran rental like George Springer could be worth exploring.
If the Arizona Diamondbacks are looking to add a veteran at the trade deadline, look no further than Toronto Blue Jays' George Springer.
Springer, 36, has recently been linked to the D-backs thanks to a post from The Athletics' Tim Britton, Johnny Flores Jr., Chad Jennings, and Eno Sarris.
Currently, the Diamondbacks have an outfield that consists of Max Kepler, Ryan Waldschmidt, and Corbin Carroll. Seeing as Carroll was just removed from Monday night's game, it could be worth looking at making an addition.
All indications are it's nothing serious with Carroll, but injuries happen. The D-backs are only half a game out from a Wildcard spot, so if there was ever a time to get aggressive, it's now.
Adding a veteran certainly wouldn't hurt
When it comes to bench options for Arizona's outfield, the likes of 27-year-old Tim Tawa and 25-year-old Jorge Barrosa are quality candidates. Neither have been playing at an elite level, but they're still quite young and don't have nearly as much experience as someone like Springer.
The biggest question would be, where does Springer fit into this lineup? Some moves would have to be made, no doubt, as it's not like the Diamondbacks would be giving up Kepler, Waldschmidt, or Carroll to bring him in.
Springer is a free agent after this season
This move would absolutely be a rental, but that's the market this team should be in. Making the playoffs is step one, and then everything can come together from there. No one is saying the D-Backs have to pay Springer $150 million like the Blue Jays did, and it's not realistic to think he's going to make that anyway in his next contract.
Rentals only work for a team that's buying, and the Diamondbacks are absolutely in the buyers' market. They don't want to make any moves that will mess up what they have at the big-league level, but bringing in Springer immediately gives them a guy who's got a ton of experience in the postseason and could help elevate some of the youngsters around him.
In 265 at-bats this season, Springer is slashing .219/.302/.381. There's no doubt he's had better seasons, and for him to have a -0.1 WAR is a bit surprising. At the end of the day, though, that's why he's on the trade block. Should he come to Arizona, he'd immediately offer more than Tawa or Barrosa, and that's all the Diamondbacks may be asking for.
