Eduardo Rodriguez delivered a vintage performance, firing 115 pitches to stifle the Los Angeles Dodgers and secure the Arizona Diamondbacks the season series.
For the first time since 2018, the Arizona Diamondbacks have won the season series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The D-backs' most recent win was highlighted by a dominant Eduardo Rodriguez start, one that saw him throw an astonishing 115 pitches in seven innings.
Starting pitchers never seem to throw that many pitches anymore, but manager Torey Lovullo had a ton of confidence in the 33-year-old pitcher, and it paid off in a big way.
Arizona can officially close the book on its series against the Dodgers this season. This season series came down to the wire, but the D-backs prevailed and have won the majority for the first time in eight years.
Most importantly, Arizona has beaten LA in six of their last seven meetings. Rodriguez gave this team a huge boost in the finale, and it's a start he won't forget anytime soon.
Season-high strikeout number for E-Rod
There's no hiding the fact that the Dodgers have one of the most prolific offenses in all of baseball, but for whatever reason, they've been in a massive slump. Arizona has capitalized on that a few times this series, and Rodriguez brought his best stuff on Sunday, Aug. 9.
The southpaw fanned a season-high nine batters in his seven innings of work. Obviously, a high strikeout number corresponds with a high pitch count, but that didn't prevent him from working deep into this game. His nine strikeouts were the most he's thrown in an outing since June 23, 2025.
Highest pitch count in seven years
It's been eight years since the D-backs last took a season series against the Dodgers, but it's also been seven since Rodriguez has been asked to throw this many pitches in a game.
Keep in mind, this marked his eighth start of the season where Lovullo has asked him to hit triple digits. With the way he's been throwing the ball this season, that comes as no surprise.
Rodriguez has now thrown 100+ pitches in each of his last three games. Overall, the 115 he threw surpassed every start he's had since September 9, 2019.
Rodriguez joins elite company
MLB.com's Jesse Borek pointed out the fact that Rodriguez has now thrown 24 innings against the Dodgers this season and allowed only five runs. He's 2-2 in those games, but joins Yu Darvish in an exclusive club against the Dodgers.
Officially, those are the only two pitchers to face L.A. on three or more occasions in a year and post a sub-2.00 ERA.
