Former Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Tommy Pham recently made his position clear regarding Ketel Marte and publicly voiced strong support for his former teammate.

Appearing on Foul Territory, Pham reflected on the relationship the two built during their time together in Arizona and explained why he remains firmly in Marte’s corner.

Pham shared that after arriving in Arizona, he frequently spent time with Marte away from the field and developed a close friendship with him.

“When I got traded over to Arizona, I would go over to his house after a game, and we’d spend time together,” Pham explained.

Because of that relationship, Pham acknowledged that his perspective may naturally carry bias.

Still, his message remained direct.

Pham described Marte as a difference-making player and emphasized that his value extends beyond statistics.

He pointed to the adversity Marte has dealt with throughout his career, particularly injuries, and suggested that maintaining his confidence and comfort is more beneficial than creating additional frustration.

Pham also reflected on Marte’s impact during Arizona’s 2023 postseason run.

He credited Marte as a central reason the Diamondbacks advanced past the Philadelphia Phillies and suggested that his influence during that series cannot be overlooked.

Beyond postseason moments, Pham argued that players often provide more long-term value to organizations than contracts fully capture and indicated that, from his perspective, Marte has consistently delivered for Arizona.

“When he’s right, he could carry your team. He carried us through that Philly series in the 2023 playoffs. If it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t have gotten past Philly. That’s just the truth. The seasons he’s given the Diamondbacks, if anything, I feel like the organization owes him a lot. I know they just broke him off,” Pham said.

“You could say, ‘Well, we’ve paid him for what he’s done.’ The player has always given more to the organization than the organization has given to the player. That’s just the way it works out as an athlete. You’re usually giving them back 2-3 times on the return than what they’re giving you.”

That perspective fits Pham’s public image.

Throughout his career, he has rarely avoided expressing strong opinions and has consistently spoken directly about situations involving teammates and organizations.

Pham’s own time with Arizona was productive.

Across 50 games with the Diamondbacks, he hit six home runs, drove in 32 runs, posted a .720 OPS, and helped contribute to the club’s run to the World Series in October 2023.

More recently, however, Pham’s own situation changed after he was designated for assignment by the New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles and entered free agency.

Meanwhile, discussion around Marte continues.

There is growing impatience among parts of the fanbase as expectations remain high.

This season, Marte is slashing .259/.315/.451 with 12 home runs and 46 RBIs in 73 games, producing a 110 OPS+.

Those numbers remain above average, but Arizona needs more if it hopes to climb back into the race.

The Diamondbacks currently sit at 39-38 and remain behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres in the National League West while also sitting without a Wild Card spot.

If Arizona plans to reverse course, Marte will remain one of the most important pieces.

Beyond the production, Marte’s value comes from qualities teammates consistently recognize.

One of his strongest traits is calm leadership.

He rarely appears overwhelmed and tends to stabilize difficult stretches.

Another defining quality is resilience.

Marte has repeatedly worked through setbacks and returned as an important contributor.

He also brings versatility, consistency, and an ability to impact games in multiple ways.

Those qualities help explain why players such as Pham continue defending him and why Arizona’s hopes remain closely tied to what Marte does moving forward.
