The Arizona Diamondbacks target a critical rotation boost as Zac Gallen and Michael Soroka could rejoin the team next week in Kansas City.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are just days away from potentially having Zac Gallen and Michael Soroka back with the team.
No, this update does not include Corbin Burnes, but there should be more on his status sooner rather than later.
In the meantime, The Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro reported that Gallen and Soroka will each pitch in a simulated game on Friday, Sept. 4, with hopes that will get them both up to speed and be the last thing they need before returning to the majors.
If all goes well for them in their four-inning, 60-pitch outing, there's a chance they're both back as soon as Monday, Sept. 7, when the D-backs begin a three-game road series against the Kansas City Royals.
Gallen last pitched on July 7
It's been an incredibly long time since Gallen has pitched at the major league level, but the 31-year-old clearly lost a step this season.
Gallen is just 3-9 with a 6.34 ERA that really gives the team something to think about. His WHIP is above 1.50, and he's a -1.6 WAR player.
Gallen's WAR is the lowest on the team, and it's not particularly close. Paul Sewald was at -1.2, but the team made it crystal clear they no longer wanted him around when he was pulled from the ninth-inning role and later designated for assignment.
For reference, there's not a single Diamondbacks player other than those two with a WAR under -1.0.
Regardless, Gallen could rejoin the team in early September. If he is indeed back for the Royals series, that would get him back with seven series remaining, which still allows time for him to make a few starts, if that's the role they decide to put him in.
Soroka last pitched on August 22
Obviously, the severity of Soroka's injury is nowhere near what it was with Gallen, someone who had to be transferred to the 60-day Injured List.
Soroka, 29, is 8-4 with a rock-solid 3.40 ERA this season. His 1.16 WHIP really puts into perspective just how poor Gallen has been, and it's worth noting Soroka is a 1.9 WAR player, which is the second-highest he's had during an individual season in his seven-year career.
Other than getting teed off on in his start on August 22, Soroka had been incredible. Prior to that point, he allowed only five earned runs in his last five starts, and there's a clear reason why he has the third most wins on this team.
