The Arizona Diamondbacks rolled to a commanding 9-4 victory on Wednesday over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, which also marked their series win over the Cardinals.

In the win, 22-year-old rookie left-hander Mitch Bratt made his MLB debut in a start for the Diamondbacks, who are dealing with several pitching injuries at the moment.

In three innings of work, Bratt showed some good things while also showing areas he will need to improve, as he struck out three batters and allowed two hits, two walks and one earned run.

Before Bratt’s start, Diamondbacks senior vice president and assistant general manager Amiel Sawdaye joined Arizona Sports on 98.7 FM to discuss what can be expected from Bratt on a major-league mound.

"Bratt um, you know, [had] a little bit of a hiccup, um, probably a couple of weeks ago where he just had a minor shoulder thing," Sawdaye said. "But, um, you know, throughout this season, he's been… He just attacks. He's another one that comes after you, you know, four or five pitches; throws a lot of strikes."

In Bratt’s outing, he threw 54 pitches, and mixed four different pitch types into his evening, according to his Baseball Savant profile: a fastball (21 pitches), a slurve (17 pitches), a slider (12 pitches), and a sinker (four pitches).

While Bratt has a complete arsenal he can rely on, Sawdaye made it clear that Bratt will not be a flamethrower.

"You know, [he] has a good change up, has a good slider, you know, as you're not going to see, he's not going to light up the radar gun, he'll be low nineties," Sawdaye said. "But he's going to go attack, attack hitters. And, um, you know, I think letting guys put the ball in play or trusting his defense, um, really not beating himself. So, it's exciting for him.

"It's exciting for us as an organization," Sawdaye added. "To get a chance to see two young pitchers that, you know, obviously we traded for Bratt last year, but two young pitchers that we've had in the organization come up and make big starts for us."

On July 19, 2021, the Texas Rangers signed Bratt. For multiple seasons, he remained in the Rangers’ minor-league system until the 2025 MLB Trade Deadline, when he was dealt to the Diamondbacks along with left-hander Kohl Drake and right-hander David Hagaman in a deal that saw Merrill Kelly go to Texas. 

Before being called up, Bratt appeared in 11 games with Triple-A Reno and had a 1-1 record with a 2.84 ERA.
