The Arizona Diamondbacks did not have an answer for the Miami Marlins.
The Arizona Diamondbacks were swept by the Miami Marlins on Thursday in the form of a 2-0 defeat, marking their second shut-out loss in as many days.
The Diamondbacks fell to 34-34 and are now 3-7 in their last 10 games. What went wrong for them?
Unable to Hit
After logging six hits in 33 at-bats in Wednesday’s 8-0 loss, Arzona’s lack of offense was on display again on Thursday. This time, it was more egregious.
The Diamondbacks mustered just three hits in 29 at-bats on Thursday and struck out 13 times. The Marlins utilized five pitchers, and Arizona's batting order did not have an answer for any of them.
The Diamondbacks did not get their first hit until the top of the fourth inning, when Ketel Marte hit a lead-off double. Then, in the top of the sixth inning, Jorge Barrosa hit a leadoff single. Finally, in the top of the seventh, LuJames Groover hit a single.
Over their last two games, the Diamondbacks have gone just 9-for-62 (.145 batting average) and have struck out 23 times. According to MLB.com, over the last 15 days, the Diamondbacks' .198 batting average is the worst of the 30 teams in Major League Baseball.
Damage Done Early
For the most part, the Diamondbacks’ defense was going pound-for-pound with the Marlins and not letting their hitters get anything easy.
Unfortunately for Arizona, Miami made the most of the first inning by loading the bases after Merrill Kelly began the frame by allowing consecutive singles and a walk before Xavier Edwards hit a sacrifice fly ball to put the Marlins on the board.
Kelly and the defense were able to get out of the inning, but in a game where the Diamondbacks could not score, Miami’s lone run in the first would have been enough for the win.
Later, in the bottom of the fourth, Kelly opened the frame by giving up a walk and a single. The defense was able to get two outs, but Kelly then gave up an RBI single to Jakob Marsee to make it a 2-0 game.
What’s Next?
After being swept for the fourth time this season, the Diamondbacks find themselves on the brink of falling below .500. Moreover, the San Diego Padres have jumped them for second place in the National League West Division.
With an ongoing offensive slump and losses piling up, the Diamondbacks will look to course correct when they visit the Cincinnati Reds for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 4:15 p.m. MST.
