The Arizona Diamondbacks seek consistency in order to turn their season around.
After losing to the Minnesota Twins on Sunday, the Arizona Diamondbacks lost the weekend series, dropping their overall record to 39-38.
Over the weekend, the Dbacks also suffered some brutal injuries to the squad, losing two pitchers to the Injured List. Relief pitcher A.J. Puk was placed on the 60-Day IL on Friday with an elbow injury, and starting pitcher Michael Soroka is on the 15-Day IL after straining his left glute on Saturday.
Left fielder Jordan Lawler also found himself sidelined on the IL on Saturday with a right hamstring strain, and he will spend 10 days on the list.
While the recent injuries have been a problem for Arizona, the biggest issue has been a lack of consistency shown over their first 77 games of the season.
The 39-38 record speaks to that point. They have had many stretches of multiple-game losing streaks paired with multiple-game winning streaks, and vice versa.
However, the good news for Arizona is that the team is aware of the issue and is focused on playing complete baseball games.
During the post-game press conference on Sunday, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo emphasized the importance of integrating all three facets of the game.
"They know how to win baseball games, and they're gonna get this thing turned around... We've got to put it all together and start playing some consistent baseball," Lovullo stated.
Shortstop Geraldo Perdomo also called out the offense, declaring, "We, as an offense, need to fight."
Perdomo's comments have to come largely from their loss against the Twins on Sunday, when they scored only two runs, and from the shutout loss to the Los Angeles Angels earlier last week, as they have also been up and down at various points in the season.
Currently, the D-backs sit in third place in one of the National League's most competitive divisions (NL West) and are on pace to miss the postseason for the third straight season, having made the World Series in 2023, where they lost to the Texas Rangers.
If Arizona wants any hope of turning things around, it must start now as it has three weeks left in the first half of the season. Going into the All-Star break with momentum could lead to a legitimate run at the postseason.
That may be easier said than done. The Diamondbacks face tough matchups in their remaining series before the break, including top teams such as the Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers, and division rival and two-time reigning champion Los Angeles Dodgers.
The San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres are the other division opponents scheduled to appear on the Diamondbacks' schedule over the next three weeks.
