The Arizona Diamondbacks enter the All-Star break facing one of the most important decisions of their season.

Although they trail the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West by 11.5 games, at 49-47, they’re fighting for a postseason berth.

The Diamondbacks sit just 2.5 games behind the Miami Marlins for the last National League Wild Card spot.

That position leaves the front office with a difficult balancing act as the August 3 MLB trade deadline approaches.

Should Arizona continue buying in hopes of reaching October, or prepare to sell if the club falls further behind?

According to Bob Nightengale from USA TODAY, the Diamondbacks could become sellers if their position in the standings deteriorates over the coming weeks.

Nightengale reported that starters Eduardo Rodríguez, Michael Soroka, Merrill Kelly, and Zac Gallen, along with closer Paul Sewald, could all become trade candidates this summer.

“The Diamondbacks, who have been mired in mediocrity, could have starters Eduardo Rodriguez, Michael Soroka, Merrill Kelly, and Zac Gallen available along with closer Paul Sewald,” Nightengale wrote.

That report represents one of the more significant rumors surrounding Arizona ahead of the deadline.

Moving multiple veteran pitchers would likely bring back a substantial return of prospects.

It would also signal that the organization has shifted its focus away from competing for a postseason spot in 2026.

Such a decision would surprise many observers considering how close Arizona remains to the Wild Card race.

The Diamondbacks still have time to strengthen their position after the All-Star break.

If they remain within a few games of a postseason berth, selling becomes much more difficult to justify.

If the team slips further behind and finds itself more than five games out of a Wild Card spot by the deadline, however, the situation could change quickly.

Several of the reported trade candidates are scheduled to become free agents after the 2026 season.

That makes Kelly, Gallen, Soroka, and Paul Sewald logical trade chips if Arizona decides to prioritize the future.

Rodríguez presents a much different case.

Unlike the other veterans, Rodríguez remains under contract through the 2027 season after signing a four-year, $80 million deal.

He was an All-Star this season, and carries a 2.29 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 114 innings over 19 starts this season. 

Trading a pitcher with that combination of production and contractual control would represent a much more significant organizational decision.

For now, the Diamondbacks remain in the postseason race.

That makes the coming weeks especially important.

Arizona’s performance after the All-Star break will shape the organization’s deadline strategy.

If the Diamondbacks stay in the Wild Card race, the front office could reinforce the roster. If they fall further behind, selling becomes a much more realistic option. That could lead to several established veterans being moved before the deadline.

Rodríguez has consistently demonstrated the qualities teams value in a veteran frontline starter. He attacks hitters with confidence, mixes his pitches effectively, and shows the ability to adjust his approach as games develop.

His experience allows him to remain composed in difficult situations, helping limit damage even when opponents begin putting runners on base.

Beyond his performance, Rodríguez provides leadership and stability within a pitching staff, qualities that become especially important during postseason races.

Pitchers with reliability, adaptability, and experience are always in demand. Rodríguez brings all three qualities. That is why contenders would likely show strong interest if the Diamondbacks decide to make him available.
