The Arizona Diamondbacks remain within striking distance of a National League Wild Card spot, sitting at 45-45 just 3.5 games behind the Miami Marlins.

However, with less than a month remaining before the MLB trade deadline, the organization could face a difficult decision if it fails to gain ground over the coming weeks.

Should Arizona ultimately decide to become a seller, Thomas Harrigan from MLB.com believes one of the franchise’s biggest trade chips should be veteran left-hander Eduardo Rodríguez.

Although Rodríguez remains under contract through the 2027 season, Harrigan argued that Arizona should consider capitalizing on the veteran’s outstanding rebound campaign while his trade value is at its highest.

According to Harrigan, moving Rodríguez now could allow the Diamondbacks to acquire premium young talent while also creating additional payroll flexibility heading into the offseason.

“Although E-Rod is under contract through 2027, it would be wise for Arizona to capitalize on his rebound season by making him available for trade,” Harrigan wrote.

“... allowing Arizona to get back some young talent and also free up payroll heading into the offseason.”

Such a move would undoubtedly represent one of the organization’s most significant decisions in recent years.

Trading a frontline starter in the middle of a strong season is never an easy choice, particularly for a team that entered the year expecting to compete for a postseason berth.

At the same time, the Diamondbacks must carefully weigh their long-term outlook against their current position in the standings.

His outstanding season, additional years of team control, and the likelihood of a seller’s market all contribute to making him one of the most intriguing trade candidates should Arizona ultimately shift its direction before the deadline.
