Explosive bats and a dominant Eduardo Rodriguez fueled the Arizona Diamondbacks' high-altitude victory.

The Arizona Diamondbacks could be a few games away from making the playoffs this season.

That all depends on how things go for the Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres, but there is a world where Arizona could control its own fate.

Fresh off a 12-8 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday afternoon in a game that featured 35 combined hits, the D-backs improved to 85-74.

At the time of writing, that puts them 2.5 games back of the Phillies. Philadelphia is currently playing the Milwaukee Brewers, so the outcome of that game will decide if it's a two-or three-game deficit.

Obviously, knowing there are only three games left, the D-backs are rooting for the Brewers in a big way.

That said, they still have a chance to catch the Padres, even though San Diego is currently the top team in the National League Wild Card race.

Should the Padres fall to 88-71 tonight, that leaves the door open for Arizona to leapfrog San Diego in the regular season finale, but only if they're able to sweep the Padres.

Eduardo Rodriguez improves to 16-7

Early run support was a-plenty for Eduardo Rodriguez in this one as he enjoyed a 6-0 lead before stepping foot on the mound.

That lead would become 8-0 by the time he came back out in the bottom of the second. Arizona had a 10-0 lead in the fourth and then a 12-1 lead at the top of the sixth, so it was a bit alarming to see this one end as close as it did.

Rodriguez may have allowed nine hits, but he only allowed a pair of earned runs in his six innings of work. In total, he threw 92 pitches, 65 of which were for strikes, and saw his ERA fall to 2.89 in his final start of the regular season.

Diamondbacks hit three home runs

A trio of D-backs players homered in what was their final game at Coors Field this season. To say they made the most of the elevation would be an understatement, so it'll be interesting to see how things turn out in their upcoming three-game slate at San Diego.

Nolan Arenado hit a two-run blast in the first inning, and Gabriel Moreno would later add one of his own.

In the sixth inning, eighth hitter James McCann hit his sixth homer of the season.

Arenado and Moreno had three RBIs each, and then McCann was tied for second on the team with Pavin Smith, as those two each drove in two runs.
