Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lars Nootbaar was a trade deadline acquisition, but what does his long-term future look like with the team?

The Arizona Diamondbacks are caught between a rock and a hard place.

On the one hand, they continue to be a winning baseball team. But on the other hand, winning baseball games has not been enough to get them back to the playoffs since they won the National League pennant in 2023.

Even after going 86-76 this season, the Diamondbacks were buried under the weight of the National League's competition. Now, with an impending lockout in Major League Baseball and the publicly stated aspirations by owner Ken Kendrick to trim payroll, Arizona is not in an easy position.

The Diamondbacks are talented, but they need the most from every player on the roster, and that includes left fielder Lars Nootbaar.

Examining Nootbaar's season with Diamondbacks

As the MLB Trade Deadline approached in early August, it seemed as if Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen and the front office were not going to make a move at all.

Then, Arizona made a buzzer-beater move to acquire Nootbaar from the St. Louis Cardinals for right-hander Daniel Eagen, left-hander Sandro Santana and a player to be named later. In acquiring Nootbaar, the Diamondbacks were getting another hitter and more depth in the outfield.

Though, in a way, his acquisition was somewhat of a flyer.

Upon coming to Arizona, Nootbaar had appeared in 48 games for the Cardinals in 2026 and had posted a .234 batting average, a .333 on-base percentage, a .354 slugging percentage and a .687 OPS. His OPS was sitting well below the MLB average of .719, and there was no guarantee he was going to improve with a change of scenery.

However, Nootbaar came to the Diamondbacks and made his mark. In 42 games with Arizona and 127 at-bats this season, Nootbaar boosted his batting average to .244, his slugging percentage to .409 and his OPS to .762.

He also hit five home runs and drove in 17 runs. He was a good addition to the Diamondbacks, but his presence was not enough to get them back to the playoffs.

When Arizona acquired Nootbaar, it was with the understanding that he would be under team control through the 2027 season and would become an unrestricted free agent in 2028. Given the kind of delays a lockout would introduce and Kendrick's desire to cut costs, it will be interesting to see what Nootbaar's future with the organization looks like.

For the time being, though, he is on the roster, and if he plays for the Diamondbacks through 2027, he will need to be the best version of himself to ensure a payday (whether with the Diamondbacks or another organization). Arizona will also need him to be at his best to aid in the mission of playing October baseball once again.
