Justin Wrobleski did everything to keep the Los Angeles Dodgers afloat, but it was no use. Atlanta Braves beat Dodgers 7-2.
The Los Angeles Dodgers had chances to take the rubber match against the Atlanta Braves on Mothers Day. But for the second consecutive day, the offense heated up too late.
Even with starter Justin Wrobleski toeing the rubber for Los Angeles, Atlanta did just enough for a 7-2 series win.
Wrobleski Settles in, Despite Running Into Trouble Early
The 25-year-old southpaw did everything in his power to keep the Dodgers in this game throughout his outing.
Though the Braves tacked on a four-run second inning — the most runs Wrobleski has given up all year — he managed to somehow revert back to his recent ways.
From that disastrous start to his outing, Wrobleski retired 16 batters in a row and pitched into the eighth inning for the second time this season.
At 84 pitches, Wrobleski was sent out to pitch in the ninth inning. The Braves' Matt Olson greeted him by hitting a solo home run to extend Atlanta's lead.
He then plunked Mike Yastrzemski near the ear area on his 100th pitch of the game, and that would be all she wrote for Wrobleski.
In the end, Wrobleski produced an unusual line score of 8 2/3 innings and tied his career high with seven strikeouts. But the bigger picture is that he saved a taxed Dodgers bullpen that had to call up right-hander Wyatt Mills for some additional depth.
Dodgers' Offense Sputters for Second Consecutive Day
The Dodgers' offense was non-existent in the rubber match until the final outs for the second consecutive day.
Atlanta starter Bryce Elder held the Dodgers' lineup in check after giving up a single to Andy Pages in the first. From that point, Elder retired 15 straight hitters in a row until the sixth inning.
Elder lost sight of his command as he walked the bases loaded. Max Muncy came up to bat with two outs and the Dodgers down 4-0.
Muncy got ahold of a ball and drove it to deep right field. But Atlanta's Eli White went full force and face first into the wall to make a spectacular play to end the inning.
Muncy threw his hands in the air in disbelief while crossing first base.
He got his revenge in the Dodgers' home half of the eighth as he launched a two-run home run over the right-field wall to put the Dodgers on the board.
What's Next ?
Looking ahead, the Dodgers welcome in the rival San Francisco Giants for a four-game set.
Roki Sasaki will kick off the series on the mound for Los Angeles on Monday.
