On Friday, the Athletics claimed infielder Andy Ibáñez off waivers, officially ending his brief tenure with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Ibáñez had been designated for assignment earlier in the week after the Dodgers claimed outfielder Michael Siani, a move that ultimately squeezed him off the 40-man roster.
His time with the organization lasted just 23 days, following the signing of a one-year, $1.2 million major league contract in mid-January.
Known for his defensive versatility, Ibáñez is capable of handling multiple infield positions and has been noted to be effective in platoon roles against left-handed pitching.
With Kiké Hernández still unsigned and recovering from left elbow surgery following the World Series, Ibáñez appeared to be a potential fit for the Dodgers had he remained in Los Angeles.
Hernández has yet to sign with any major-league club this offseason, leaving some uncertainty regarding the Dodgers’ infield depth and right-handed options off the bench.
That context made Ibáñez a logical short-term solution, particularly given his experience and positional flexibility.
The Dodgers likely anticipated a different outcome when they placed Ibáñez on waivers as clearing waivers would have allowed them to retain him as organizational depth.
Had he gone unclaimed, Ibáñez would have had the option to accept an outright assignment or return to free agency by forfeiting the remainder of his guaranteed contract.
For the Athletics, Ibáñez provides a low-risk option who can contribute across multiple positions while offering leadership and experience to an evolving club.
The move closes the door on Ibáñez’s short stay in Los Angeles while giving him an immediate opportunity with an Athletics team looking to build depth and stability heading into the season.
