Blake Snell’s return to throwing marks a vital milestone after his surgery, though the Los Angeles Dodgers remains cautious.
The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Blake Snell on the Injured List on May 15 because of loose bodies in his left elbow, creating another setback for a rotation that has dealt with injuries throughout the season.
Now, there is at least a positive development.
Snell began playing catch Friday, marking an important checkpoint in his recovery process and signaling that the left-hander has been medically cleared to resume throwing activity.
While that does not mean a return is imminent, it represents meaningful progress a little over two weeks after Snell underwent surgery on his left elbow. The Dodgers are expected to continue following a measured rehabilitation plan before considering the next phases of his recovery.
At this stage, Snell still has multiple benchmarks to complete before being activated from the IL. As he advances through his throwing program, a more defined timeline for his return should gradually become clearer.
Even with this encouraging update, Snell will not be eligible to return before the All-Star break next month.
Manager Dave Roberts emphasized that the organization intends to remain cautious throughout the process and explained that recovering from surgery creates a different type of buildup compared to a normal offseason preparation cycle.
Roberts noted that rehabilitation and progression remain the priority and acknowledged that the exact timeline remains uncertain. He also indicated the Dodgers intend to protect Snell during the process, even if the pitcher is eager to accelerate his recovery.
“When a guy is, obviously, coming off surgery is different than an offseason, but the buildup is like any season,” Roberts said according to Sonja Chen from MLB.com. “There’s the rehab part of it, but the progression -- I don’t know about the timeline. But it’s gonna be a ways. We’re gonna make sure that we kind of take care of him, but I know Blake’s gonna want to speed this process up.”
That approach reflects both the long-term importance of the player and the realities of returning from an elbow procedure.
Snell’s Presence Extends Beyond the Numbers
What makes Snell such an important piece for Los Angeles extends beyond results and production.
At his best, Snell brings a rare combination of deception, confidence, and the ability to dictate at-bats on his own terms. His style on the mound forces hitters into uncomfortable situations because of how well he changes speeds and sequences pitches. Few pitchers create the same feeling of unpredictability once they settle into rhythm.
Another defining trait is his willingness to attack despite adversity. Snell has repeatedly shown the ability to recover within outings, make adjustments, and maintain conviction even when situations become difficult.
For the Dodgers, that presence matters. A healthy Snell does not simply add another arm to the rotation. He provides a different look, a different mentality, and the type of competitive edge that can influence an entire pitching staff during the most important stretches of the season.
