The Los Angeles Dodgers continued to stockpile pitching depth, claiming right-handed reliever Grant Holman off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks while transferring right-hander Gavin Stone to the 60-day injured list to create roster space.
Holman, 25, joins his third organization in a matter of months after a brief stint with Arizona. The Diamondbacks had only recently claimed him from the Athletics during spring training before designating him for assignment on Opening Day to make room for multiple roster additions.
A product of UC Berkeley, Holman has appeared in parts of two major-league seasons, compiling a 4.66 ERA across 40 outings. While his big-league results have been uneven, his minor league track record suggests more upside.
Over five seasons in the minors, Holman has demonstrated an ability to miss bats at a higher rate while maintaining solid run prevention. This includes an impressive stretch at the Triple-A level where he posted dominant numbers despite pitching in a hitter-friendly environment.
For the Dodgers, the move represents another low-risk addition with flexibility. Like fellow newcomer Jake Eder, whom the club acquired earlier in the day, Holman has minor league options remaining.
That allows Los Angeles to assign him to Triple-A Oklahoma City without immediately committing a spot on the active roster, giving the organization time to evaluate and refine his usage.
The corresponding move involving Stone underscores the team’s cautious approach with one of its young starters. Stone began the season on the Injured List due to shoulder inflammation and has yet to return to game action after dealing with significant shoulder surgery last year.
Although there is no indication of new structural damage, the Dodgers are opting to give him additional time to rebuild strength and ramp up his throwing program.
Stone has recently resumed throwing, effectively restarting his progression as if it were Spring Training. He is expected to require several weeks before beginning a minor league rehab assignment, making the 60-day IL move a practical decision for both recovery and roster management purposes.
Holman’s addition gives the Dodgers another controllable arm who can provide bullpen depth or be called upon if injuries persist. The club continues to navigate the early portion of the season with a focus on maintaining pitching stability.
