Following Miguel Rojas’ retirement, the Los Angeles Dodgers eye a versatile trade target to bolster their depth.
Now that Miguel Rojas has retired, the Los Angeles Dodgers are in need of a new utilityman.
Rojas, 37, retired after the team was swept in the National League Championship Series.
Going out with a third straight World Series Championship would've been quite the story, but instead he announced his retirement after a heartbreaking Game 4 loss.
Here in 2026, Rojas played first, second, and third base, along with shortstop, and served as a designated hitter and pinch hitter for the Dodgers.
Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller referred to him as a "super utilityman," and that's a position that warrants an interesting replacement.
Miller mentioned three different players the Dodgers could sign, but in the end, he believes a trade for Detroit Tigers' Zach McKinstry would be LA's best path forward.
Dodgers could take a chance on McKinstry
This is the ultimate definition of buying low as McKinstry hit just .199 in '26.
The 31-year-old is set to earn an estimated $5 million as he's arbitration-eligible in 2027, so it's not like the Dodgers would have to pay him a ton to come in and play every position under the sun.
For reference, the Ohio native played second and third base along with shortstop and all three outfield positions this past season.
McKinstry acted as both a pinch hitter and designated hitter as well, so he has incredible value defensively, even if he wasn't a tremendous hitter this year.
Miller called the Dodgers infield depth chart "pretty shallow," so going out and getting McKinstry would be an interesting option.
McKinstry has a ton of experience in the outfield, but this is a guy who spent a major chunk of the 2025 season at third base, and 2024 at shortstop.
In 2023, he split time evenly at second and third base along with right field, having 100+ at-bats at all three positions.
Below is a breakdown of his 2026 season with the number of at-bats he had at each position compared to Rojas's.
McKinstry's versatility in 2026
- Second base: 92 at-bats
- Third base: 16 at-bats
- Shortstop: 70 at-bats
- Left field: Four at-bats
- Center field: 14 at-bats
- Right field: 160 at-bats
Rojas's numbers in 2026
- First base: Three at-bats
- Second base: 107 at-bats
- Third base: 13 at-bats
- Shortstop: 63 at-bats
Seeing as McKinstry can play the outfield, and that's something Rojas hasn't done since 2014.
Trading for McKinstry doesn't feel like the big-splash move the Dodgers will need to return to the World Series, but bench players are extremely important, and this is definitely an option worth exploring.
