Dave Roberts notes key offseason additions and timely execution as the difference in a 5-4 win over Arizona.

Following the Dodgers’ narrow 5-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, manager Dave Roberts pointed to a combination of new faces and situational execution as the foundation of the victory.

The spotlight naturally shifted to closer Edwin Díaz, whose entrance brought a jolt of energy to the stadium. Accompanied by a live trumpet performance, a moment that resonated with both fans and players alike.

“It was great… I heard there might be a live trumpet player, so having that as part of the mariachi was really special, and he performed,” Roberts said.

Beyond the spectacle, Roberts emphasized what Díaz represents for this year’s bullpen structure. After navigating recent seasons without a fixed closer, the Dodgers now have a dependable presence in the ninth inning.

“To have somebody at the back end that you trust… that dependability is huge,” Roberts said. “You can manage the game differently when you know you’ve got a shutdown guy in the ninth.”

Offensively, the Dodgers relied on situational hitting from Kyle Tucker in the eighth and productive outs from Diaz, which ultimately helped them win this matchup.

“The two acquisitions this offseason came up big tonight,” Roberts said.

Execution also showed up on the defensive side, where a clean relay play helped limit damage and preserve momentum. Roberts praised the sequence for its precision.

“It was executed perfectly… get it clean, hit the relay, and finish it—that’s exactly how you draw it up,” he said.

On the mound, the Dodgers saw flashes of effectiveness early before some inconsistency crept in from Emmet Sheehan. Roberts noted that while Sheehan's stuff looked sharp initially, it diminished as the outing progressed.

“Early on the stuff was good… then it just started to fall off a little bit—we’re still trying to figure out why,” Roberts said, suggesting the issue may be mechanical.

There were also encouraging signs from Mookie Betts, who continues to look strong at the plate early in the season.

“I think with Mookie, the first thing you notice is he’s more physical… the swing is in a really good spot,” Roberts said.

In a tightly contested game, Roberts ultimately framed the win as a product of timely execution and improved roster balance—particularly with the addition of a proven closer anchoring the bullpen.
