A bizarre ninth-inning baserunning collapse by the Philadelphia Phillies allowed the Los Angeles Dodgers to execute a rare 5-2-6-4 double play.
The Los Angeles Dodgers improved to 64-38 as they were able to reclaim the best record in all of baseball.
It was roughly 24 hours since they lost that claim to the Milwaukee Brewers, but the Dodgers took advantage of a Philadelphia Phillies baserunning disaster and paired it with a Brewers shutout loss.
There hasn't been a game to end quite like this one in a while, and it was very uncharacteristic of the 56-46 Phillies to lose, 2-1, the way they did.
In what has been ruled a 5-2-6-4 double play, the Dodgers recorded two outs in incredible fashion. Ultimately, it's a play that has to be seen to be believed.
Dodgers discuss turning two to secure the win
With one out in the ninth, the Phillies had Justin Crawford on third while J.T. Realmuto was on second base. MLB.com's Todd Zolecki confirmed Crawford was supposed to break for home immediately, but there seemed to be a miscommunication as Crawford didn't believe he was supposed to go if it was hit towards third base.
When a ball came Max Muncy's way, Crawford hesitated but eventually started sprinting home.
"He [Crawford] didn’t take off right away,” Muncy said. “So I knew I didn’t have to rush myself. Made sure to field it. Wet ball, spinning pretty crazy on that grass, so I just wanted to make sure I secured it. After that, just executed the rundown.”
Muncy threw to catcher Dalton Rushing, who ran back to third base in what would cause all sorts of confusion. With Realmuto staying put at third, all Rushing had to do was tag Crawford to record the second out of the inning.
Suddenly, Realmuto panicked and started running back to second base.
Dodgers closer Tanner Scott immediately made sure his teammates were aware, "When I saw J.T. going back, I think that’s like the first time I’ve yelled on the field,” Scott said. “I was like, ‘Mookie, two!’”
Scott, who picked up his 15th save of the year, discussed his PG reaction to getting out of the jam, "Oh poop, oh poop. That was my reaction. I mean, it was just crazy. Two great plays.”
Manager Dave Roberts recapped everything after the Dodgers snapped a two-game losing streak, saying, "It’s just fundamentals. Max did a great job securing the baseball, understood the tying run was going home, ran him hard back. To be quite frank, Dalton should have run the player back.
"He didn’t, but fortunately J.T. made an uncharacteristic baserunning mistake, and fortunately Mookie threw a dart to second base. Big adrenaline, big win, saved some pitches from Tanner. Real fun ballgame to be a part of.”
In a game that was delayed due to the weather, the Dodgers pulled out a huge win that sets up a deciding series finale on Wednesday, July 22. Eric Lauer eyes his fifth win of the year for the Dodgers as he'll go toe-to-toe with Aaron Nola, a struggling 3-7 veteran with a 5.68 ERA.
