Alex Vesia has been a dependable high-leverage reliever for the Los Angeles Dodgers, but his sustained success could make him more difficult to retain as he enters free agency.
The Los Angeles Dodgers could face a difficult decision this offseason as left-handed reliever Alex Vesia approaches free agency. After establishing himself as a consistent bullpen option over six seasons with the organization, Vesia has built a resume that could attract significant interest from clubs looking to strengthen their relief corps.
Vesia appeared in 72 games during the 2026 season, finishing with a 2.64 ERA across 58 innings. He recorded 74 strikeouts and a 1.07 WHIP, continuing to demonstrate his ability to limit baserunners while providing manager Dave Roberts with a dependable option in important situations.
His performance represents the kind of reliability that teams value in a bullpen. However, that consistency could also make Vesia more expensive to retain, potentially creating a challenge for Los Angeles as it evaluates its offseason priorities.
Vesia has established himself in Los Angeles
The Dodgers acquired Vesia from the Miami Marlins in February 2021 in a trade that also brought right-hander Kyle Hurt to Los Angeles in exchange for Dylan Floro. Vesia had made his major-league debut with Miami in 2020 after being selected in the 17th round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of California State University, East Bay.
Since joining the Dodgers, Vesia has become a regular part of their bullpen, appearing in 372 games and recording a 2.87 ERA over 332.1 innings through the 2026 season. He has accumulated 443 strikeouts, a 1.11 WHIP and 22 wins during that stretch.
His performance has remained strong across multiple seasons. Vesia posted a 2.15 ERA in 2022 before delivering one of the best campaigns of his career in 2024, when he recorded a 1.76 ERA over 67 appearances and 66.1 innings.
A potential costly decision for the Dodgers
Vesia's value extends beyond his statistics. As a left-handed reliever with extensive experience in meaningful games, he offers a combination of versatility and familiarity with the Dodgers' system that could be difficult to replace.
However, the same qualities that make him valuable to Los Angeles could encourage competing teams to pursue him aggressively. Clubs seeking bullpen help may be willing to offer a multiyear contract, particularly if they view Vesia as a reliable option for late-inning assignments.
The Dodgers have the financial resources to compete for established relievers, but retaining every key contributor is not always practical. The organization must balance Vesia's potential contract demands against its other needs, including opportunities to improve the roster elsewhere.
If another team presents a more attractive offer, Los Angeles could ultimately lose the left-hander despite his successful tenure.
Vesia's departure would leave the Dodgers without an experienced arm who has repeatedly handled high-leverage assignments. Still, his free agency could force the organization to determine how much it is willing to pay for bullpen continuity.
For Vesia, the opportunity to secure a substantial contract could represent the next step in his career. For the Dodgers, keeping him may depend on whether his proven production justifies the investment.
