Despite acquiring Tarik Skubal, the Los Angeles Dodgers solidified their rotation by retaining Eric Lauer, who provides crucial depth.
The Los Angeles Dodgers made one of the biggest moves of the MLB Trade Deadline by acquiring two-time reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. However, the blockbuster has not changed the organization’s plans for Eric Lauer.
Following the trade, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman confirmed that Lauer would move to the bullpen, creating immediate speculation that the veteran left-hander could become a trade candidate before Monday’s deadline.
That scenario never materialized.
Instead of being dealt, Lauer remained with Los Angeles and will continue serving as a member of the starting rotation moving forward.
The decision is hardly surprising considering how valuable he has been this season.
Lauer is 5-0 with a 2.96 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 51.2 innings over nine appearances (eight starts) with the Dodgers this season.
Even more impressive, the Dodgers have gone 9-0 in games in which he has pitched, highlighting the impact he has made despite joining a rotation filled with star talent.
An embarrassment of riches
Lauer also made his preference clear before the deadline.
The veteran expressed that he wanted to remain in Los Angeles rather than be traded before becoming a free agent after the season.
Not only did the Dodgers keep him through the deadline, but they also decided he will remain part of the rotation instead of shifting permanently into a relief role.
He ultimately got exactly what he wanted.
The move provides the Dodgers with another dependable starting option as they continue chasing another World Series.
When the regular season reaches its final stretch, Los Angeles could feature a rotation led by Skubal, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Justin Wrobleski, Roki Sasaki, and Lauer. The Dodgers also are awaiting the returns of Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Shohei Ohtani, and Kris Bubic from injury.
That depth gives manager Dave Roberts multiple options as the team prepares for October.
Lauer’s potential
