Eric Lauer continued his impressive resurgence with another quality outing for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday. He further strengthened what has become one of the more surprising success stories in the team’s rotation this season.

Facing the Colorado Rockies, the left-hander allowed three earned runs on six hits (one home run) with three strikeouts and two walks in six innings.

It marked the third consecutive start in which Lauer completed at least six innings. Lauer provides exactly the type of stability the Dodgers have desperately needed. They continue dealing with injuries throughout their starting staff, so his rise is highly appreciated.

Consistency has quickly become Lauer’s calling card since arriving in Los Angeles.

The veteran is 3-0 with a 3.12 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 40.1 innings over seven appearances (six starts) with the Dodgers. This is a remarkable turnaround from his difficult stint with the Toronto Blue Jays earlier this season.

Lauer struggled to a 6.69 ERA and 1.49 WHIP in 36.1 innings across eight appearances (six starts) with the Blue Jays this year. He had little certainty regarding his future, was designated for assignment in May, and eventually traded to Los Angeles for cash considerations.

At the time, Toronto’s decision seemed understandable.

Lauer simply was not producing the results the Blue Jays needed. It was difficult to justify keeping him in the rotation. For the Dodgers, however, acquiring him represented an opportunity born out of necessity as injuries continued to thin their pitching depth.

That decision has paid off in a significant way.

With Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow sidelined, Lauer has stepped into the rotation and consistently delivered quality innings.

Rather than simply filling a temporary role, he has begun establishing himself as a dependable option.

Los Angeles has legitimate aspirations of winning a third consecutive World Series. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays own a 43-49 record.

It would be unfair to criticize Toronto for moving on from a pitcher who struggled during his time there. However, every successful outing Lauer produces naturally raises questions about whether the organization gave up on him too quickly.

One of the more interesting aspects of his turnaround involves his role.

During his time with the Blue Jays, Lauer openly expressed frustration about pitching behind an opener.

Yet, after joining the Dodgers, he embraced a similar assignment without hesitation and delivered one of his best performances of the season on June 29. That day he threw six no-hit innings against the Minnesota Twins after an opener handled the first inning.

That willingness to adapt has been rewarded.

Lauer’s resurgence also highlights something the Dodgers have repeatedly accomplished over the past several seasons.

The organization has developed an outstanding reputation for identifying overlooked pitchers. They’ve acquired them at relatively little cost, and placed them in situations that maximized their strengths.

Once again, Los Angeles appears to have uncovered value where another organization saw limited upside.

Beyond the impressive results, Lauer has demonstrated many of the qualities teams value in dependable starting pitchers.

He has shown resilience by overcoming early-season struggles without allowing adversity to define his season.

His professionalism and willingness to accept different roles have made him an easy fit within the Dodgers’ pitching staff. And his adaptability has allowed him to succeed in a variety of situations.

Lauer has also displayed the confidence to continue attacking hitters regardless of previous outings. This is an important characteristic for any veteran navigating a long MLB season.

His steady approach, preparation, and team-first mentality have helped him earn the trust of the coaching staff and teammates alike.

Those attributes, combined with his recent consistency, suggest he can continue serving as an important piece of the Dodgers’ rotation.
