Dave Roberts stands on the precipice of his 1,000th victory as the Los Angeles Dodgers look to beat the Athletics and cement their manager’s legacy among baseball’s elite.
Fresh off a dominant 9-4 win over the Athletics, the Los Angeles Dodgers know they're one win away from securing manager Dave Roberts' the 1000th of his career.
Currently sitting at 999-606, Roberts is just one win away from winning his 1000th game as an MLB manager.
Having been with Los Angeles since 2016, this is a long time coming. Sure, the four-time World Series Champion did begin his career with the San Diego Padres, but all of that is behind him, and it's not like the Padres helped him contribute to his 999 wins.
The Dodgers have just two games remaining in what was coined out to be a grueling road stretch, one they made look easy. LA swept the Minnesota Twins, took two of three in San Diego, and now are one win away from not just history, but their third straight series win on the road.
Roberts Could be 69th Manager to 1K Wins
As of Monday, June 29, there are only two active MLB managers with 1,000 wins. Shockingly, Detroit Tigers' AJ Hinch recorded that milestone last night while Cincinnati Reds' Terry Francona has seemingly been at the 1K mark forever.
Here on Tuesday, June 30, Roberts has a chance to etch his name in history. While he's nowhere near the 13 managers who have 2000 career wins, Roberts is only focused no taking things one game at a time. To be part of an exclusive club with only 68 other managers would be incredible, and now it's up to this extremely talented Dodgers squad to get him there.
While the Dodgers would've loved to get win 1,000 for Roberts at home, it's not like they're going to purposely drop either of these next two games against the Athletics. This team has the best record in all of baseball for a reason, and that's because Roberts treats each one with the respect it deserves.
What's Next After 1,000 Wins?
1K wins is an incredible milestone, but one would argue winning four World Series as a manager is even more impressive. The 2016 NL Manager of the Year has been hungry to win that award again because at this point he's seemingly done it all.
Win No. 1000 is well within reach, and it's almost a guarantee to happen against an Athletics team that is 40-45. If not, it should go down back at Dodger Stadium against the Padres, which coincidentally happens to be the team that gave Roberts his first job as a coach.
