Los Angeles Dodgers prospect Charles Davalan is expanding his defensive versatility in the Arizona Fall League.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are continuing to develop their next wave of position players, and Charles Davalan is experimenting with a new defensive role that could help accelerate his path to the major leagues.
Davalan, ranked No. 6 among Dodgers prospects by Baseball America, has primarily played the outfield since entering affiliated baseball. However, he is receiving opportunities at second base in the Arizona Fall League, potentially adding another dimension to his game as Los Angeles considers its long-term roster construction.
The experiment comes at an important time for the organization. The Dodgers have accumulated considerable young outfield talent, creating competition for playing time at the major-league level and potentially complicating the path for several highly regarded prospects.
Davalan adds versatility in Arizona Fall League
According to a report from Dylan Hernandez of the California Post, Davalan has been working at second base during his time in the Arizona Fall League. The additional position could make him a more flexible option for the Dodgers as he continues progressing through the minor leagues.
Davalan reached Double-A in September, moving another step closer to the majors. Although he still has development ahead of him, learning a new position could provide the organization with additional ways to use him when he is ready for a promotion.
The Dodgers have several established outfielders occupying prominent roles on their major-league roster. Andy Pages, Kyle Tucker, and Teoscar Hernández currently provide the organization with three options in the outfield, not to mention the breakout performance of Josue De Paula.
Dodgers face an outfield logjam
Davalan is not the only young outfielder approaching the major leagues. Eduardo Quintero and Mike Sirota occupy the top three positions on Baseball America's Dodgers prospect rankings, giving the organization several potential contributors to consider for the future.
De Paula has already made his major-league debut, but the current roster configuration could make consistent playing time difficult. A potential trade involving Hernández has emerged as one possible way to create additional opportunities, although no such move is guaranteed.
Sirota also advanced to Triple-A late in the 2026 season, while Quintero received a brief promotion to Double-A. Both are progressing through the system, adding to the competition for future outfield spots.
Second base could offer another opportunity
Second base presents a different situation for the Dodgers. Tommy Edman currently appears positioned to receive opportunities at the position, but his recent injury history creates some uncertainty about his availability over a full season.
Alex Freeland is another option, though he has yet to establish himself offensively through his first 118 major-league games. Hyeseong Kim also provides versatility as a utility player.
That uncertainty could make defensive flexibility particularly valuable for Davalan. If he can demonstrate that he is capable of handling second base while continuing to develop as a hitter, the Dodgers would have another potential option to consider when evaluating their roster.
There is no guarantee that the experiment will lead to a permanent position change or an immediate major-league opportunity. Still, Davalan's work in the Arizona Fall League gives him a chance to expand his skill set while the Dodgers navigate a growing surplus of outfield talent.
