The Los Angeles Dodgers were able to take care of business Wednesday afternoon against their bitter rival, the San Francisco Giants.
This was all in due part of Shohei Ohtani making his Cactus League debut on the mound. The Dodgers beat the Giants 5-1.
Ohtani was impressive in his debut on the rubber, tossing 4 1/3 scoreless innings and striking out four while only giving up one hit.
He topped out at 99.9 mph, and despite the command looking shaky in the middle of his outing, resulting in two walks. Ohtani reportedly was happy with where his pitch count ended, which was at 61.
Although a scoreless outing looks good on the final line score, Ohtani said through an interpreter in postgame comments that he still has a few things to tweak before his next outing later on this month.
"In terms of the next outing, I do want to be better at executing in two-strike counts. I just didn’t finish off hitters as much as I wanted to," Ohtani said.
The Dodgers were able to score first in this contest, with their first pair of runs coming in the bottom of the first. Mookie Betts and Teoscar Hernandez singled in the first two runs of the game.
First baseman Freddie Freeman added some extra cushion in the third inning with a splash, launching his first home run of the Spring to center field.
The game was quiet on both sides for a couple of innings until the seventh inning. Dodgers infielder Nick Senzel caught a Trevor McDonald sinker and sent it to the left-field berm for a two-run shot.
This extended the Dodgers' lead over the Giants to a comfortable 5-0 score heading into the eighth.
But the Giants showed signs of life, with Victor Bericoto launching a solo shot, his third of the Spring, off Tanner Scott.
This game ended in the eighth due to a heat warning. Temperatures reached up to 98 degrees, and play was deemed unsafe to continue.
With the win, the Dodgers notch their 19th Cactus League win and have two more games at Camelback Ranch.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto will get the start this Friday against the San Diego Padres. Yamamoto was named the Dodgers' Opening Day starter, so this would be his final spring outing before he kicks off the season against the Arizona Diamondbacks on March 26.
After those final games at Camelback Ranch, they will cap off their spring by playing the Los Angeles Angels in a two-game exhibition series.
